When it rains it pours. I have the utmost respect for you as a goat owner. We all doubt ourselves. It was good to read how you are persevering. My fingers are crossed that all goes well. I'm already giving you a standing ovation!

Alright morning update!

***Mia***
We seem to be closing in on going into labor FINALLY. She is much more vocal, udder is getting shiny and her ligaments are finally getting a lot softer. Hopefully she goes in the next few hours.

***Penny***
If it wasn't for her having still pretty firm ligaments I would say she could start pushing at any time . The poor girl's udder is HUGE (has been for 2 days) her belly has been dropped as well and the poor thing is touchy as all get out . But she is still holding out...I wish she would just go already.

***Zoe Bird***
She is happy going over due it looks like! Udder STILL hasn't even started really filling up and her belly hasn't dropped. Her ligaments have been softer but unless she kicks into high gear fast (which I know can happen) I could see her easily waiting another day or two.

***Rhapsody***
The poor girl, she is still getting her stuff every 3-4 hours and it seems to be keeping her stable. Her belly seems to have dropped more and we are now 16hrs into when I induced her and so far so good. I do have a question for you ladies on her though. She is never standing when I go out to do my checks. I ALWAYS find her laying down, she can get up (and will) when I go to give her the drench but other than that she prefers laying down. I have a bucket of water in front of her and she is drinking nicely. Should I just not worry?

I was thinking of giving her 30cc's of CMPK the closer she gets to being 30hrs away from her induction. What are your thoughts on that?

Anyways that is the morning updates! I hope they start popping soon! My cousin is getting married on Sunday evening and if I need to I will miss it but I really hate to do that to him .

Justine

We have labor! Mia has some goo and is obviously in labor (no pushing yet) and even Ms. Rhaps has some goo . I have a feeling I am going rather busy today.

I am just anxiously waiting . I am debating giving Penny and Rhaps some CMPK. Penny had a mild case of milk fever last year and with Rhaps having the pregnancy toxemia I don't think it would hurt either one of them really.

when im doubt...give some cmpk...it won't ever hurt them and can really help when it's contraction time

good luck

Alright I went ahead and gave Penny and Rhapsody 30cc's of CMPK. Man do they HATE that stuff though . Mia is getting closer and we had a couple of small pushes/contractions but nothing serious. She is just chewing her cud and I am trying to be patient with her.

Okay so I do have another question on Rhaps, the poor thing is miserable. She stands there making a noise every once in a while and we have a tiny bit of teeth grinding. She perks up (trying to get away) when I give her stuff but other than that she just seems miserable and uncomfortable. Is this pretty normal for inducing a doe?

I never had a baby but I would think that it would cause me to grind my teeth and make noises...and even say some curse words
How are YOU holding up ?

lots of does in labor (induced or natural)..will spend a lot of time just standing there..usually 12 -18 hours before they kid...I think it's while the kids are shifting positions getting ready to come into the world...at this point I would rather see standing then a lot of rubbing her sides along the wall...that can.an indication of tangled up kids...that didn't move into position during the standing phase

sounds like she is just getting going well (this is the phase you usually miss if you don't induce and aren't watching them like a hawk)

Rhapsody has a nice snotty nose now! Arg! She never has a snotty nose but now she is nice and snotty/stuffed up . What else is going to go wrong with this poor doe! I know a snotty nose isn't the worst thing but I read that giving dex (which I gave last night) can suppress the immune system. I feel like a mom who is worrying over a hang nail but I just can't help but worrying about it now!

Should I just keep an eye on it? She doesn't SEEM sick except for a snotty nose. I am just ready for tomorrow to be here and have her and hopefully Penny kidded out. Poor Penny is having a hard time lumbering up now she is so stinking big and full .

I am going to catch some before my 1am wake up call to check on Rhaps (she will be at 29 1/2hrs from induction).

If the snot is clear I wouldn't panic it could be just some allergies or some dust irritating her nose. I'm surprised the vet didn't have you give injectable CMPK from the get go. I would have been giving dex too, I think the combo works better then the propylene glycol.

Giving only Dex for induction is common in cows. It does not work for goats, I tried several years ago. For future reference both Lute and Estrumate can be used to induce labor in goats and both work really well unless your Macy who's buckling's back was against her cervix so she wouldn't dilate the little stinker.

Hugs and I hope thing work out well for the girls and you have uneventful labors.

I just got in from the barn. A BIG thanks to Susie for talking with me on the phone and being a shoulder for me . Rhapsody had three premie kids, she was in fact due May 29th. Two bucks and a doe, all where alive when born but died shortly after birth.

The good news is Rhapsody is doing awesome and is even chewing her cud again. She hasn't looked this good since Wednesday which is something to be very thankful for. I am upset that I lost the kids but I made a judgement call and I still feel I made the right one (still can't help but kick myself though) .

I am heading back out to the barn, thank you again SO much Susie for letting me talk and being there for me. I feel like the worst goat momma ever...now I am crying again .

Don't you dare beat yourself up over this... remember.. it's always DOE over kids.. unless you can't save the mom.. Rhapsody will recover from this and go on to give you the doe kid you want...Glad I was here...happy you called.. that's what friends are for.

big hugs

I know...I am trying not to and I am feeling better. Seeing Rhapsody feeling better I feel I made the right choice. I have no CLUE why she got pregnancy toxemia and so early as well. This was her third set of triplets and with the other two she never got pregnancy toxemia. Maybe it was because I started giving grain TOO early and it was too much protein?

I will never know and all I can do is be thankful that Rhapsody IS doing better and she IS okay. I do have ANOTHER question, with her being so early delivering I can still milk her right? Will her production go up to normal or will it stay lower?
