Thank You All

Again thank you all for your support. This has by far been the hardest thing that I have ever been through. She was such a sweet little girl. I am now frantic to prepare myself for any and all possible pet emergencies. I am looking at placing a HUGE order through Valley Vet. I'm even looking into the Vet Tech classes at San Juan college, but they want you to work in a clinic at the last part and the closest one is 160 miles from here. So, that pretty much put the ca-bosh on that idea. I would appreciate any tips or advice on things that you would consider a must have for medical emergencies. Is there a list on here some were about that sort of thing? I'm new to the posting thing so I'm not real sure how that all works.

Remotealaska, I am sorry you lost your doe. ((hugs))

You did the best you could without knowing what was truly going on with her; and Remotealaska, that will happen to the best of us and even to some who have raised goats for many, many, many years. Your doe could have died from any number of things and only a necropsy would tell you what. (If you have that done, you might know better how to prepare your medicine chest.)

You can prepare as you find the information and feel the need. Still do not expect yourself to be a cure-all for everything that occurs with your pets. It is simply impossible to save all those we love no matter how hard we try.

I'm sorry about losing your goat.

I believe there is a 'sticky' on the top of this forum with a list of must haves.

I'm so sorry for you loss. A couple of years ago I lost a little doe that I had bottle fed and was very close to. It's never easy, but seems harder when you're so attached to them.

I know how much you are hurting I am so sorry. You can only prepare so much and even vets can't save everything. But I understand wanting to be as prepared as possible.
3 things that I see on this forum a lot that people need right now it's hard to get right now is...
*Banamine
Activated Charcoal (at least one tube for each goat)
Ammonium Chloride (if you have any male goats)
And since you are so far away from a vet I would also suggest keeping a bottle of *Dex on hand
Other things to have
Fortified Vitamin B
Type C D Antitoxin
1% injectable Ivermectin
Vetericyn VF wound care (pricey but lasts a long time and worth the money) Get the VF (vet formula) in the white bottle...http://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.h...vetericyn%20vf
*BoSe if you live in a selenium deficient area.
CMPK
Baking Soda (this should be out and available to the goats along with the minerals)
Speaking of minerals...make sure you are supplying either loose minerals high in copper or giving mineral doses with Replamin Gel
Feeding tube
Non-steroid antibiotic ointment
Saline
Of course bandages and vet wrap, iodine, peroxide, alcohol, syringes of all sizes and needles.
www.fiascofarm.com is a good site for lists.
It takes a long time to get stocked up. As you read on the forum, and see what others are using for different maladies and keep a list going for your next order from Valley Vet or Jeffers. That is what I do. I put an * in front of the item that are RX
((((more hugs))))

Remote

How long would have to do the tec thing?
If it would help to have more skilled people here in Alaska I would be able to provide you a place to stay at no cost to you---Just a cabin not much but free. (AVOID WINTER TIME IF YOU WENT THIS WAY-

Tech Program

The program that I am looking at is 2 years if I'm full time and 3.5 years if I'm part time. The lady I am talking to said that I can also work at a kennel so I need to see if a dog mushing kennel would count. I'm sure that Joe Redington Jr or Brent Sass would be fine with me volunteering at their kennels and they are both within 20 miles. I have dog sat for Brent with Wild and Free a few times. That is also were 3 of my 4 sled dogs are from. The hardest part would be that I have three young children(6, 4 & 4) so I can't go to far from them or all my animals that will still require my care(dogs, goats, chickens). It's a huge deal just to arrange a pet sitter when we make an overnight supply run to Fairbanks. Usually the kids and I don't go just because it's so hard. Now I am looking into the financial aid portion of the classes. I would not be able to start until next term at the earliest.

I have also ordered several books on veterinary care specific to goats that are supposed to contain both traditional and more natural home type remedies. My husband is an ETT so we have ETT supplies on hand for people so I'm not as worried about injuries it's more illness and general health that really worry me. I have most of the basics for wound care and wonder dust. I'll check out the sticky before I finalize my order.

I always keep a container of baking soda available and a mineral block, but it sounds like I should look into a loose mineral since that seems to be the most recommended. I might post the contents of my order before I place it and have you guys let me know if there is something that I should add or anything that I shouldn't order because it may be a waste of money.

Thank you all again for helping me out here I really do appreciate all your time and advise.

Wanted to Share

This is a poem written by my 12 year old nephew. He lives here on the homestead with us, with my parents in a separate cabin. He and his 13 year old sister have helped in the care of the goats and spent a lot of time with them.

In Memory of Sugar the goat

You were a happy friendly goat you brought a smile to my face
But now your gone leaving only sorrow suffered away at night
You were always hungry but now you will never eat again
You left leaving your friends looking with sadness
You had a nice life full of joy but you left us
We celebrate your memory but mourn your leaving
We wish you were here but without pain
We loved you just as you loved us
Good bye my friend I won't forget you

Oh, I am so sorry for your loss. *Gives an encouraging hug* Your posting here was proof enough that you were doing all you could think of to help her, even though it was to no avail this time- I hope that will be some small comfort.

I am SO SORRY that you lost her!! It is very hard and it does hurt. Rest assured that you took good care of your goat and she had a good life. That's all we can do for the animals we love and they love us for that.

I know you will be a wonderful goat owner in the future. Don't give up! As hard as it is, we can learn from each sad thing that happens in our herd and make it a happier, healthier herd for the future.
