Well I got the scare of my life tonight. I gave Frankie the ivermectin injection. I rubbed and rubbed and rubbed...he jumped off the milkstand and went to the other side of the barn and sat down like a dog!!!! ON his butt! And he wouldn't get up. I thought I killed him. I lifted him up and said come on everyone lets go! and we all walked down to the mailbox and open the gate. I thought, get his mind off it and get him moving...he ran all the way down and head butted Flossie all the way back so all is fine now. But man-o-man that scared the carp out of me! I will be doing it orally instead now.

We bought a buck home from Texas a decade ago, who then got diarrhea real bad his first winter. Got him to the vet and he had horrible lice. So the vet gave him an injection of Ivermectin and he screamed bloody murder, like we'd shot him or something. We felt so badly, that we've never injected it in a goat since. And if we bring in goats with some lice going into winter, we give it orally and they've been fine. We body clip everyone during the summer, so we usually don't have much of a problem with our own stock.

Having said that, I've never seen a goat rub all the hair off like that with lice. Broken hair, yes, but not rubbed off like that. Hope you get him set straight, whatever it is, bless him.

When 1 of my bucks had mites a couple winters ago I started him out with a shot of the ivermectin plus then did orally after that too. I could tell when I gave the injection that the stuff must really sting.

You can try the Ivermectin paste rubbing it into the affected areas too Min, that's what I did & it worked but mine had the crusty kind of mites going on. I used M-T-G on the affected areas & then ivermectin paste rubbed into the same spots.

With Frankie's being such a large area orally might be better for him. make sure to give him a little more than a little too less.

That's why I did two shots instead of one. Even though hitting with two seems awful, it seemed to bother her a lot less than one big one.
BTW my vet provided me with a handout about how long various wormers stay in the system. A sort of this per centage left in the muscle after this many days.
The reason for doing the shots is that it was much longer acting. So if there were injections for a three week period, it would build up to a higher level and last longer than oral ones. If given orally, the level was basically gone in 11 days and did not build up much while the injection was longer in the system- 23 days? I'm going to try to find it and post.
Also, the amount that needs to be given for mites, which burrow in the skin, it double the normal level. I found that doing this orally for Timmie caused to lose weight and not be interested in eating. It took a couple of months for her wight to get back to normal.
One of those darnd if you do and darned if you do something else and darned if you don't.

I've looked for that handout and haven't found it. I will keep looking.
