I took him out some warm molasses water - which he showed zero interest in.

But he is actually eating pretty darn good!

Hopefully this is just a short setback for him and he'll feel better in a couple of days. This crappy weather is supposed to break and I am of the opinion that if they can get outside - preferably under some sun - and do the things they like to do best, such as browse, that they are much better off.

It's just been so wet and miserable for the last several days.

I have to admit, though, that having another sick goat so soon after losing Zoey just terrifies me.

((((hugs)))) I would be scared too! But he is eating and browsing..that is huge! Just stay on top of it and I'm sure he will be fine. Have to be xtra careful with the older ones...and very patient.

I hate giving Nuflor. We call it "hot". All but one of my pygmies has screamed, gone to their knees, then started rubbing on the fence while crying. Hate hate hate giving it. If you don't give it fast, they can jerk away before you get it all injected. Giving it slow does not help.

Actually, I did give it to him very slowly today and it went much better.

I was really nervous about it because of what happened yesterday, but today I took him out, away from the other goats, and gave him some alfalfa pellets with a handful of grain (breaking my cardinal rule of NEVER giving grain to a wether).

I injected it very slowly while he was distracted with the grain/alfalfa pellet mix and he acted like he didn't even notice.

He seems to be doing really well. He's eating and was outside for awhile this morning with the others when we had a bit of a break in the weather.

He still doesn't look very good - just kind of "rough" looking - but I think that's likely more a symptom of his age than whatever bug he's had.

No more green snot.

One more dose of the Nuflor tomorrow.

Is there anything else that I should do for him?

We're supposed to get a little sun over the next few days. I'm a huge believer in the healing properties - both physically and mentally - of the sun and I'm hoping that will help. I know it always helps me.

Correction: I just came in from feeding and he does still have a snotty nose.

Crap.

I didn't see that today.

I 2nd the 5 days of Nuflor if he's still got a snotty nose. Then start him on Probios. Do you give the Replamin Plus gel? Might be a good idea if not to get a tube anyways & give him 5cc per week for awhile to make sure he's getting what he needs. Age & all he might not be consuming enough minerals.

You had asked about the B complex - TSC now sells it as a complex and just the B12. I'd do the nuflor for the 5 days as well. Also I don't know if any of you have heard of it, but we use VetRX whenever they have cold symptoms. We use it for all our animals and always clears it up within a day or two.

Ok, I'll call the vet and see if I can get a couple more doses.

After my next payday, I'm going to see about getting a prescription to Valley Vet or one of the other places for a bottle of Nuflor.

Banamine, too, because he has quoted me over $50.00 a bottle for that, although I haven't priced it yet on-line.

I've been thinking about the Replamin as well, mostly for my old Sweet Pea. I am giving her a human vitamin A-D gel tablet every day on the recommendation of my friend with the dairy.

Is VetRX prescription or over the counter?

Thanks.

I'll be putting together another Jeffer's order next month and I'll put this on my list.

Whoops. This month - I forgot today was February 1. lol

He's had his third dose of Nuflor. I don't see any snot today but I didn't yesterday, either; it wasn't until I fed last night that I saw the snot. I called my vet and will be picking up two more doses tomorrow so I can go ahead and do the five days.

He seems to be feeling better. He was actually playing a little with the babies, Aspen and Artemis. Well, it was probably more of a case of them playing with him and he just kind of went along with it. But it was still good to see and not something I think he would have done a couple of days ago.

Sounds like he's doing pretty good but the 2 more days of Nuflor will just be piece of mind so that you know he really kicked it.

It's always such a relief when they start acting normal (even if naughty is normal) after being off. I'm glad you got the extra Nuflor and that he is getting better!

I wish I had taken a more vigorous approach with the Nuflor with my Zoey in December. Things might have turned out differently.

As it is, I lied to my vet - told them another one of the pygmies was showing the same symptoms as Squirt in order to get the extra.

Hopefully he will give me a prescription and I can just get my own bottle of it on-line (for almost half the cost of what he said he would sell it to me for).

He did have a bit of a snotty nose last night but not as much as the night before and way less than he did when he first got sick.

Yeah, it was good to see. It was just some head butting and rearing up and it was brief but it made me happy. He was one dejected looking old guy a few days ago.

Now if I could just get them to live forever.

Well, there is good news.......and bad news.

I just got in from feeding and there is no doubt that Squirt feels better and looks better. He was much more alert and I could hear his squeaky (very distinct) little sound he makes when he thinks I'm taking too long to get into the goat house with the alfalfa.

But....the bad news is that he is very congested this morning. Quite a bit of snot and I can hear him breathing through it.

Two more days of Nuflor....and then what? What if he is still snotty? I don't know how many more single doses of Nuflor I can get without my vet starting to get suspicious.

He's congested in the lungs? The Nuflor should kick any pneumonia. What is his temperature? It's good he's acting better & eating but the congestion would concern me.

Might need to talk to the vet & let him know what's going on just in case he has any ideas plus then he'll know why you think you need more Nuflor.

No Nuflor.

The vet was supposed to put it in the cooler on the back porch of the clinic since they're not there on Saturdays and it wasn't there when I went to pick it up. There were two other bags with meds in them for someone else but nothing for me and not my needed Nuflor.

Either they forgot or someone accidentally picked up the bag meant for me.

I haven't taken his temperature. I can't find my thermometer and when I stopped at the store on Wednesday (a little country grocery store), they were out. I should have gotten one today when I was in town but forgot.

I'll see if I can get one this evening at the other store in town when I go in to pick my son up.

I'm not so sure the congestion is in his lungs. Definitely his nose, and when I went out to milk a couple of hours after feeding, I was looking at him and the snot was greatly reduced and he was breathing fine.

He was also standing at the fence, watching me milk and the three does (my milker, my old Saanen, and little Aspen) all eating their grain and alfalfa pellets and he was squeaking at me. I gave him a small amount, which he scarfed down, and I gave him probios at that time, too.

He has a great appetite now and he just looks happier and more bright eyed and he's more active. I just hope not getting the Nuflor for the next two days doesn't set him back. I guess I'll be calling the vet first thing Monday morning, that's for sure. I am NOT happy about that and I'll be glad when I can get my own bottle to have on hand and to administer as I see fit.

As far as asking the vet's advice - to be honest, I'm not so sure I set much store in it. I think he was very vague about what was going on with Zoey and things might have/should have turned out differently there.

His big thing seems to be horses and his small animal work, although I've found him to be a little vague and disinterested, at times, in the cats and dogs, too. He's getting up there, and he shakes, which makes me suspect something (maybe Parkinson's?) and I half expect him to retire before too long.

If I think I need to get some advice about Squirt, if he doesn't get cleared up completely in the next couple of days, I'm going to call another vet. There are very few vets around here who do goats but there is one who's name keeps popping up as being pretty good. The problem, though, is that he is quite a bit farther for me to go (25 miles or so one way) and he works very short hours - only four days a week. He also does NO after hours emergency work.

Anyway, I am not a happy camper today. Hopefully I can find a thermometer tonight; if not, I will just have to look a little harder for the one I have. I know it's around here someplace.
