I can sooooo relate to this. It just breaks my heart when one of my beloveds wants to get away from me when I' trying to help them. It would just make me cry even more. Don't give up though... you have something going on that can be cured. You are doing an awesome job stealing cud... that is not an easy task (and just so you know, it stains blue jeans that will never come out) I truly believe for rumen problems stealing cud is the way to go. ((((hugs)))) I will pray your girl. The only thing extra I can add is Fortified Vit B would be good to perk her up. You are a good goat mama!

Yahoooo! She greeted me with INTEREST when I went into the barn! She's alert, and looks soooo much better tonight!

Minelson - I learned after the first one that you need gloves to steal cud! I have an old pair of leather ones, and it didn't take long for the finger to be stained greenish brown. How does that smell get through the leather, because my index finger now smells like goat breath!

Should I continue with the Pepto? Should I keep stealing cud? She ate a few mouthfuls vigorously, then stopped, but that is encouraging!

Hold off on the Pepto until morning & see how she is. Just make sure she has her hay & water. I bet she's going to be as good as new in the morning.

Drats - I gave her a dose before I got this. She still had pudding poops today (one vet said no more Pepto cuz it will bind her up; the other vet said yes, it will coat her stomach)

She was eating some of the 'Hydration Hay' I got yesterday, and she was so much more interactive tonight! I did give her some probiotics tonight too.

I'm out of Pepto, so that's the first thing to get to keep on hand. I learned a lot from this experience. Like keep goat coats on hand too - found a dog coat at the local pet store, and it's just not the right fit. She really needed it in this cold though

Use an old sweat shirt, cut the sleeve off & then leg holes. if that's too small for her use a childs sweatshirt & cut the leg holes in the belly of the shirt & tie & sew up the arms or the arms can be for the goats from legs.

Most farm stores carry Kaolin pectalin in a gallon bottle. Not that expensive & it's the same if not better than Pepto Bismol. I keep a jug in my pantry just in case.

That dose of pepto you gave her tonight will be fine. Does she also have grass hay to eat beside s the Hydration hay you bought?

I put Kaolin pectalin on my feed store list, so will get that next time I go.

She's got free choice orchard grass hay, and I've been taking out buckets of warm water all day (in addition to their cold half-frozen bucket that I keep replacing)

I'll need to pick up some old sweatshirts - we use ours till they are pretty much shredded and threadbare. DDs are too small (I've been saving those for the spring kidding) Will hit up the local Good Will.

Thanks Backfourty!

We lost her

It happened very fast - was out feeding at 5, and she was drinking and following me around, but not eating very much. DH got home at 6, and she was gone.

We learned a lot from this, and I will share in another post tomorrow for other newbies to learn from. We made a lot of mistakes

Just can't do it tonight - everything is too raw.

I am so sorry you lost her. Know that you did everything you could to save her, you did nothing wrong, sometimes it is just not meant to be. You are a good goat mommy. She is watching you from the Rainbow Bridge and wanting you to know she is okay now! ((HUGS))
