You sound just like my sister. Of course she likes winter and snow. It doesnt make her life harder i was ok with winter until the year mentioned above. Driving an hour to work... I swear everytime I closed the store there was a snow storm. so it made a Three hour drive home. I also went in the ditch that year due to a bridge with black ice. Since then Ive been a pill about it.

I also don't like it when it's over 85. In the summer I have to wear long sleeves and big gooft hats. Otherwise I'm a roasted duck. Plus, I am allergic to sun screen. Mostl of my gardening is done in the wee hours just as day is breaking.

I learned a good tip last year from a friend that made pulling weeds and working in the garden much more enjoyable. She told me that she takes her patio umbrella out to the garden and moves it around as she works. I did it, and it works great! Depending on what time of day it is and how the sun is hitting, you can either use the umbrella base, or just put the actual umbrella side on the ground. It seems that I am able to tolerate the heat much better if I'm not in the direct sun...I tell people that I am a toad...I like it cool, dark, and moist.

a toad. Ha! That is actually a good idea. I wore Sun screen all the time as a kid. Then I turned into a hermit and NEVER went outside around the ages of 17-20. This last year when I started this whole farm thing... I put it on and I instantly broke out with contact dermatitis. I thought maybe it was just the brand, so I tried three more. Same.

Then we took a trip to california. I was in the sun all day in San Fran. It was only 65*F so no sun burn, but I broke out in my CD. I Assume from sun exposure. I will also get ranging headaches if I am in the sun too long. Not sure what to do about this problem, but it sure it irritating.

Can I just add the wind is blowing like MAD outside? Straight in from the south. I did chores in light speed mode. I am happy I didn't need to do anything special.

Iowa. I HATE you. Forecast says Saturday is going to be 49*F.... FOURTY NINE DEGREES.... then sunday? 11. Just eleven degrees. If anyone is winter sowing around me, they are definitely getting their fair share of "freezes and thaws."

If I am out in the sun too much, I will literally spend the next day puking and will get lovely cold sores on my lips. Lovely.

Sounds like I don't have it so bad then. I think it's cold photosynthesis sensitivity.

Maybe you should just spend your winters in Ohio since we don't seem to have real winters anymore!

Haha, we actually came from Ohio. Moved to Iowa when I was five. Lived in the Milford area. Grand ma and one sister still live there. We were about 1/2 hour from kentucky.

I don't hate winter when it behaves as it should I love snow on the ground, can do without ice and freezing rain. I usually spend the last month of Autumn prepping for winter so that all I have to do is run out feed water and run back in I DO hate getting cold once I am cold it takes forever for me to get warm again. I LOVE spring, summer, and fall, to me its much easier to cool down then to warm up.
This morning everything is frozen (29) but getting warmer weather this afternoon and tomorrow (hmph) 53-55 degrees.... then back down to the 20's by monday.
I want to move to warmer state

Yes! I am in Ohio and just decided to move south. Sick of the black skies
, freezing rain and mud 6 months of the year. Everything is just...dead...pure cabin fever going on here.

You sound like my hubby, Haven. He can tell me exactly how many days it's been since we've had any sunshine, how long it's been since the temperature has been above freezing, how long it's supposed to be until the temperature is above freezing, how many more minutes of daylight we're getting each day...all that stuff. I seriously don't care if the sun is out...I don't notice unless it is annoying me by being in my eyes. Of course, he works over in the North Canton area where, I believe cloudy days are only rivaled by Seattle, and I get to stay home near Jeromesville where there is much less cloud cover.

By the way, the sun is shining very brightly here right now and it is a crisp 24 degrees.

We moved to our little homestead in 2006. In Feb 2007 the worst ice storm IN YEARS hit. It started with thunder snow. A lighting strike hit our north tree line, ran through the ground, missed our propane tank, hit the phone line, and hit our furnace switch board. For a while I swore the house was burning b/c of the smell. Now we had NO HEAT. Got that fixed the next day. House heated for about 2 hrs when electric went out. Went w/o for about 4 days. THAT was a rude welcome to country life. LOL

Yup. We got the same storm. we were out of power for 6 days. Fortunately dad had camping gear and extra fuel. Our little town was out of power for 7 days. They opened up the school for a refugee shelter after the third day. It was horrible.

Odd thing though, since the sun can't penetrate the fog we're walking (and driving) through, it doesn't make for a sparkly world at all. Everything looks like its covered with moon dust, and the world is various shades of gray. Kind of like living in black and white tv land...and everyone is miserable.
Lol, one of the most surreal things I have ever seen in my life was Martin's Cove in northern Wyoming in August. It pretended to rain. As in I could see the streaks in the clouds directly above me and smell the rain, but it EVAPORATED before it hit the ground!

Yesterday I got a call from DH telling me we had no running water. No noise from the pump--nothing. And the neighbors water runs off our pump. DH goes down into the pit (which is not deep enough) and we can't figure out what is wrong with it. So we call someone and they say it froze. So we put a heat lamp down there, a crap-ton of insulation, and go over to my mom's to cook some dinner and fill up 6 gallon milk jugs so we could atleast have one toilet flush, some coffee, we could thaw out animal waters, and have some to put in the well if need be. So my mom watched Cora while we hopped down into the pit again. After some advice, we tried to take the tank out to see if we could thaw it out in front of the woodstove. Not only was that empty, but when we tried to disconnect the pipes, water was spraying EVERYWHERE. Nope that wasn't it. So we go over to the pipe sticking out of the ground (the actual Well, not just the holding tank) and find that the wiring is all messed up and the box is corroded. So the electric to the pump died. And then the water in the well pump froze. Luckily it didn't crack because it froze. It wasn't full. And luckily the electric box is a 20 dollar part and the pump didn't burn up. Fingers crossed. If the pump did burn up, its a 250 dollar fix.
Its about 10 degrees out today and it will be another cold evening spent in the well pit.Yep. Ready for winter to be done.

He works really close to me. Tell him you heard the sun came out today there. I can see it peaking through the clouds

Beautiful Pictures!

Today kinda relieved the cabin fever. Wonderful day. Took the goats and the little calf out for a walk and cleaned out the barn. A much needed break from the cold.
