Can any dairy breed be milked through, or are some better than others?

PTA's are on the pedigree. Also on the ADGAGENETICS site. Click on PRODUCTION and if there are any pta's for that animal then they will be there.

Saanens are usually milked thru more than any other breed but any breed can do it.

I'm not sure about minis. I'd guess you could do it with them.

Does this just mean milking them until they stop milking, period?

Not for me. If the drop down real low, to like 4 or 5 lbs a day I usually dry them off.

We're in a cold-winter area so they always drop their production sharply in the deep winter, but it bounces back nicely come spring even if they haven't just freshened.

Oh thank goodness! It snowed and my doe immediately dropped her production drastically even though she's only 4 months fresh. Good to know it isn't permanent.

This is TOTALLY off topic, but I am naming my next keeper goat "Squeaky McMurdo". I think it's the cutest name! It kept going through my head over and over again a few months ago. I almost named one of the boys that, but was afraid I might not keep them and I wanted the name to be around for a long time.

The managing I do through the winter are vitamin D, zinc, c, e, Bo se, copper when needed, the usual immune boosting supplements and they wear coats or a sheet type coat so heat calories aren't wasted and put into milk. I feel that warmer weather triggers milk production so I make sure they are warm. They don't grow a downy undercoat even if I delay coating, so a coat becomes necessary or they will shiver, then milk production will go down, so I prevent this.

Good point. Just reading that and thought, yeah, my one's I am milking now don't have as thick coats as the ones that are dry. Maybe I should put some coats on them. They'd probably chew them off each other though, sigh.

Mini's most definitely can be milked through...I know several breeders who do...and people with Nigerians who do too.

Lol you wouldn't be the first (well it would be the first goat named after me that I know of). I'm a moderator on a kilt forum and there was a guy that was adopting a kitten previously named Squeaky BooBoo and wanted a Scottish name for it. He decided that Squeaky McMurdo was a good compromise.

Ok back on topic....Only got 2 ounces from Cocoa this morning! I usually get 8. I'm hoping this is a combination of it being really REALLY cold out today, her being a FF, and her doeling just weaning completely.
