Sherry honestly if we could send you some rain we would! It like a monsoon over here and it lasts for months! The mud just drives me bananas, muddy dog feet, muddy shoes, muddy kids, muddy goats even my chickens are muddy! I like rain but 6-8 months of it starts to wear on you. The mud literally gets caked in their hooves. My house has wet dog smell for 8 months out of the year. I crave sun! I dream about sun!

As Nancy said practice practice practice and always end on a good note.

We have lots of exposed sandstone in the goat pen, and the goats love to play Queen Of The Mountain on the bigger boulders, so I'm really hoping they will wear their hooves down naturally so trimming isn't required so often. Is this a pipe dream?
No it's not a pipe dream. Mine play on rough concrete and I also put shingles down on the ramp leading out the door to their pen. They play on that also. Just having those 2 situations helps a lot with how often I have to trim. Sometimes I check when I realize it's been a couple months and they are still good to go.

Oh my goodness, sorry, can't help but laugh at that mental image! lol

I think I would have shot 3 goats

I bought 2 dam raised does for their genetics.... Original plan was to keep them 2 kidding seasons... But I ended up keeping one doe for just 1 kidding, the other I sold before I even bred her..... It was either sell her or shoot her. Those does gave me hell at hoof trimming and it was such a mess.

Everyone here now is bottle raised (won't own another dam raised animal!) and wouldn't dare give me trouble at hoof trimming.... I trim babies every 3 weeks usually, so my current kid pen of bred juniors are pretty good about hoof trimming... I get the occasional stomp or jerking their foot out of my hand, but overall they are good.

You have my sympathies! I would have needed pain meds and a stiff drink after that fiasco!

You know...I wonder if you worked with the really kicky doe if she might get better? Not clipped her feet but just handled her feet daily until she got better? I have a doe who is HORRID at clipping feet and I will literally stand there for 5-6 minutes just holding her leg while she kicks before she stops so I can clip. But I just let her kick it out and then she generally is okay for the rest of the time. Maybe if you tried that approach with her and also reward her when she stop kicking it would help? I know with my doe it is just having her foot/leg restrained that gets her and once she gets over that and realizes I am NOT trying to eat her leg she is fine.

But I feel your pain! It is funny because normally the kids do better at hoof trimmings than the adults (probably because they are smaller and easier to man handle if need be ).

Yes, they can get better, and in a matter of just a few days.

Addendum: Since `1 or all 3 does may be expecting, milk-shed training started today. Momma doe #1 is no stranger. She's been in and out of that milk shed for 2+ years. She's my golden doe - had a heck of a time drying her off.

Doe #2 hopped up on the stand all forgive and forget (well, mostly forget) and enjoyed her grain while I rubbed and brushed and all things mellow. You'd have had no idea that only 24 hrs earlier we were trying to peel her off the ceiling.

Doe #3, who is afraid of her shadow, is going though basic bucket training. If you take two steps into the milk shed, you'll find a bucket with grain - and it really is safe to poke your head in there and enjoy a meal. We're gettin there!

Oh my! If that was my normal trimming ritual, I either wouldn't have goats or would be on of those owners with long curled up goat feet!

Most times I'll just grab the trimmer, a pocket of treats and head to the pasture. Some stand good in my ever handy "knee lock head stanchion", the other ones learn that when I have their leg and they pull, I don't let go and it hurts, so they just stand there. I only put them on the stand if I'm going to deworm, use pour on, give shots or something as well.

Sorry to laugh at your expense but the mental picture was hilarious!! My sides hurt.

As the other said try working with them by touching, lifting feet and even cleaning hooves at random times, not to actually trim just practice. If they kick or jerk their foot don't let them win, only put the foot down when they have stopped kicking. I had one who wanted to lay down on the stand anytime she was up there for anything, I ended up putting a bucket under her upside down so she could not physically lay down, eventually she got better.

I know!

Oh yeah, hoof trimming day is definitely NOT something I look forward to. I have 4 goats, but thankfully 2 of them are still little enough (7 months old) that I can manage to hold them on my lap. The other 2 does are basically giving me an aerobics workout every time, and of course I always end up bleeding from the clippers getting me somewhere. I got my goats from a woman who has 50!!! I don't know how she does it. My 4, while I love them so much, are running me ragged!!! Have fun! Oh, I have seen slings people put their goats in for this purpose; it literally suspends the goat off of the ground and makes moving impossible for them. I keep meaning to check it out.
