Goldenwoo Farm- My jaw dropped you said you got a goat at 15 and it was ten years ago. Took me e minute to figure out that you were 15, not the goat and that no you did not own the world's oldest goat.
Or do you?

Good idea to start this thread, Alice!
My goats... wow. Like many of you, my goats have saved me from myself. I was ready to give in and let fibro take over my life, but then... I got goats. They held me accountable to getting my happy hiney outside when I'd have preferred to stay in bed, and once I was out there, well... How can a person resist those wonderful caprine characters?
When things are bad, I go out there and hang with the goaties. Even the buck is wonderful (more so when he is not in rut). And now that we have sheep, well, there is even more fun to be had!
Midlife crisis? Empty nest syndrome? Nah, just a latecomer to the joy of goats.

I'm glad that my goats have taught me so much, like my big Nubian buck today taught me that a cattle panel can be bent and broken into many pieces when he is trying to get to a lady.
the are godly creatures, I say this because like God if you want to make either laugh tell them your plans. I have also discovered both can bring you an amazing amount of peace.

My goats are a FABULOUS teaching tool for my children. They learn responsibility. They learn that about life, death and procreation. They learn that there are things in life (goats) that don't just disappear because one doesn't "like" doing that job.
They, too, are my joy. When I get no respect from anywhere else, they love me. I can fulfill my desire for "great planning" by working on breeding schedules and pedigrees. I get to practice and teach marketing skills to my children, and "waste not, want not", and profit and loss statements. As you all know, we home-school, as well as, have our own business. We are training these children to be FUNCTIONAL, CONTRIBUTING, members of society. This is good, for them and for me, and when they (the children) are gone (will that ever happen?)...I will still have my goats.
This week my DS(6) was watching us watch two goats in the breeding pen. He asked, "Mom, how do you know when they breed?" DD16 looked at me like SHE was the one on the HOT seat. I said, "Son, just watch. You'll know by their body language." He was quiet for a minute and I asked DD, "Did he get her?" DS says, "Oh, is it when he rides her?" I said, "No, not always. There are things that their bodies DO when you know that they have bred." About that time a positive contact was made and I said, "There, did you see how he threw his head and she arched her back? That's how you know when they've bred. Do you understand?" He said, "YEAH, I saw that!" I said, "Well, now you know. You just have to pay attention."
We tend to make things difficult and answer more than they ask. I always tell them the truth (unless it is something that is none of their business and then I say, "That's none of your business." ) and I think they respect that, really.

Being the crotchety ole biker I am, I thought someone should point out the physical benefits they bring to the homestead. Things like the milk, cream, butter, cheese, meat, nice hides, cleaning up the woods, etc....
SSHHHH Don't tell anyone, but I guess they do help me be a bit less crothety! LOL

Love my girls. My favorite thing is milking and having conversation with each of them as I milk. They are the BEST listeners...

They are *THE REASON* I have a farm now. Had it not been for me bringing goats to the old house, SO being a softy who fell in love with them and the town telling us we had to get rid of them, I would have probably been stuck in the suburbs forever. Goatless.

Whats good about goats is they do more than "eat cigarett butts and tin cans"
The same folks that used to giggle behind my back about me raising goats, now ask me "Hows Shaq doing?" Everyone loves him.
