cautiously optimistic

Well, today my goatie "seems" better. He is still having a bit of the scours, but not as runny as yesterday and maybe more Pepto today will help. He had yogurt this morning and this was blueberry. I used a slightly bigger box to put it in and he started trying to "drink" it, with the slurping they do with the water? So I added hot water to the yogurt, not extremely hot, should maybe have said warm. Anyway, man did he go for the blueberry water! WOOHOO! He got the red cell too, and although his membranes are nearly white, he was trying very hard to get up this morning. I didn't put him across a bale of hay or anything, but I might try that for a very short time while I'm out there this evening with the chores and getting more water in him. He didn't eat all of the yogurt, so tonight, I'm going to mix a little more water with it. He didn't eat it, mainly because he couldn't get to it. I have to figure out a way to make that easier, anyone have a suggestion? This had blueberries in it and he went bobbing for berries! LOLOL

When I tried to leave his pen, that's when he tried to get up and he called me, like wait, I want to go with you. Oh, so sad! LOL, I just put the blanket back on him and told him I would be back later. You should see the barn cats gather around and lay around him and on him. They all stay warm together! LOL I was going to take a picture, but they scatter as soon as I get close. They are not really friendly cats. They just like me at breakfast! LOL

I really, REALLY hope he is getting better!

On the Red Cell, give him at least 3 ml *every day* until you start seeing color improvement in his eyelids. He is very, very anemic. Once you start seeing color come back, you can give it to him every other day. Then, as his eyelid color keeps improving, at each level on the FAMANCHA chart, drop a day, give it every 3 days, then every 4 days, until you are at once per week doses.

You are doing great! Keep it up (and with the praying too!) and there is a chance you will have a healthy, happy boy again!

When 2 of my young does' got into a poisonous bush a couple years ago I was giving them Yogurt with the charcoal mixed in it but then switched to just the yogurt for a few days afterwards to help their rumens get back the bacteria they needed & I used a BIG needleless syringe like they use for cattle & gave it to them that way.
Now looking back an empty Probios past tube or something like that would work better because then the chunks of fruit would fit through the hole easily.

killing 2 birds with 1 stone

He LOVES the yogurt, so I thought hey, why not put more warm water with it and see what happens. I put 16 ounces of warm water in a tupperware box, and added a carton of blueberry yogurt. He has kind of fought me to drink the water from the bottle, not bad, but just didn't really want to mess with it. Let me tell you! He attacked that blueberry water, drank it completely down and then grabbed up the blueberries and just gave out a huge belch and had this really sleepy, happy look on his face, and the most purple mouth and beard. He just was laying there almost grinning, licking his lips. It was FUNNY! I think within the next couple of days he will be standing again.

Caliann I'm giving him 6 cc of the red cell a day right now, and he is doing really good about taking it. My husband laughed and said, that goat is going to get where he enjoys being sick cause he'll just get all the attention! LOL But we both think he may be going to make it. I'm not holding my breath, but he looks a LOT better tonight! He still can't stand, but I think he will be soon. He tries. His poops are still a little loose, and I'm going to give him more Pepto tonight, although I'm not totally sure I want to do that, and may reconsider it, because even though they are not firm, he is straining a bit when he goes. I think that's because of laying down, but I keep moving him out of the puddles and making it dry beneath him. I may wait until tomorrow to do the Pepto thing. Any thoughts?

dunroven...I am so happy he is better for you! What brand of blueberry yogurt and what size did you give him? I'm wondering if this would be good for Gretta since I totally screwed up on her probiotics
Thanks!

I had a ewe go down after a difficult lambing. She was totally down for over two weeks. I just cared for her and we kept going. She did eventually regain the strength to get up and try walking and she has been totally normal. So in my experience, as long as they are alive there is a chance. This ewe has been well for two years and gave me 3 good lambs since then. Alot of people would have put her down after the first few days down since they say once they are down that long they wont get up. Not always, dont give up

yogurt

Well, my husband didn't get the really correct yogurt, but since the goat is eating it, and actually looking forward to it, I am figuring it isn't hurting anything. This is Yoplait, but I was checking it tonight and it doesn't have as much nutritional value as far as cultures, so I'm going to be changing that, but I still will give it to him just because he IS eating it and when I mix it with water, he gets the water, so that's more the benefit of this yogurt, although I still think it has a few bacteria in it.

Lol

I LOVE his purple face and beard when he gets done. You just have to laugh at them with this. Tomorrow will be strawberry. He liked that too, but I'm going to divide it up into 4 doses, (2 cartons for the day), and I'm going to take 16 ounces of water plus 1/2 carton of yogurt and that way I know he will be getting plenty of water. He just loves it that way, so hey, its good for the dehydration bit!

You know, I have chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, quail, rabbits, pigs, horses, cats, a dog and the goats. Tell me why it is that of all of these animals, the goats are the ones that are the closest to my heart and I cry the worst over? I love all my animals, and I'm incredibly in love with my horses, but I'm just at a loss to explain why the goats mean so much more to me. The love they share with those big eyes is just incredible.

Are you talking the big cartons of yogurt? 32oz?? Or the little ones

Pepto tonight, hon. If what you are doing is working, *don't change it*. It's working. You know the saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"? Until he gives you actual berries, keep him on the pepto. Another round of the runs could be it for it, so don't risk it.

I am so glad he is doing better!

Okay

Michelle, I'm just doing the little cartons. Sorry I didn't answer sooner. Internet seems to be extremely slow tonight. I'm wondering if the storm is affecting things that are going to affect even our communication through here?

Okay on the Pepto. Will do. I do agree with it, but just didn't want to constipate him either without him being able to stand up when he strains.

I'm so happy!!!

My Bonsai is MUCH better tonight. Poops are formed and solid, probably berries by tomorrow or Tuesday. He's not standing yet, but he's much more active. He has been moving around in his pen and he is taking the yogurt and water, which by the way, I was wrong on. I didn't see it on the side of the little carton, but it does say live and active cultures, so hubby actually did good without knowing it! YAY HUBBY!!!!!

I think we have saved my goat!. I'm going to keep him on just the hay and water (alfalfa and grass hay) for a few more days and once I see him standing up, and getting berries, then I'll slowly start adding some goat feed back to him, and I'll be getting the minerals sometime this week, so that's going to help as well.

I want to thank everyone and as soon as he's where I can do it, I'll post pictures of my handsome buck!

W00T! That is terrific news!

You tell him that I want to see him standing by tomorrow!

Once he is standing, you need to take "before" pictures of him as he is, and label them "Just closed Death's Door", and then later, take pictures of him when he is back in good health with weight on him.

When you start feeding him grain again, don't forget the AC! Definitely don't want him getting stones after all he has been through!

Pepto again tonight. Tomorrow, if he has real berries, you can discontinue it.

Again, terrific news!

okay

I'll try to get some pictures tonight. He is woefully thin, but gaining. He started putting some weight on when I started giving him the yogurt and that's when the BMs started firming up again too, so I'm glad to know about that. He tried very hard to stand up today and he just couldn't do it, but I think tonight I'm going to stack up 2 bales of hay and lay him with his 4 feet dangling on either side of the bales, probably with an old blanket on it, of course to keep from poking him too hard, and then let him dangle those feet and get some circulation in them. I will stay with him while we do that, maybe about 15 minutes and then tomorrow we'll repeat it and see if we can get some strength back to him before he really makes it to his feet. He's just been so good at trying to get well, and I'm glad he fought so hard!

I had to stop and think what the heck AC was. Got it! I'll see if I can find that next. If not, I may have to wait a couple of weeks on money to arrive to be able to purchase it. We are soooo out of money right now its not good, but it will (hopefully soon) get better.

I'm so glad he is doing better! I think propping him up on the hay bales is a great idea.

If you PM your address to me I will send you some AC to tide you over for awhile & then you can order some later from Hoeggers, Jeffers or your feed store when you have a little more $$. No charge for anything I have a 50 pound bag & it will last me forever & I want to help.

I bet if he likes the blueberry water I bet if you have the powdered gatorade he'd like that real well in his water too & might get him to drink more.

When you do start giving him grain have some baking soda out for him to eat just in case his tummy gets upset. Good job on bringing him around though!!!!! I love it when I start to see more solid poops on a sick goat, that is when you know you are turning a corner (at least for me).

Go Bonsai!!!

hello

Hey everyone. Well can't take the pictures right now. Batteries are down in the camera, wouldn't you know. But he's doing great. If I can get the camera to work one of these days soon, I'll get pictures for everyone!

He's not standing yet, but maybe in the next couple of days. He's really slurping up that yogurt and has no problem with the red cell either, so I think we're going good. Only problem is his poops still don't look quite right, although I'm thinking with the red cell they are going to be darker. Eyes are getting more pink, so that's a good thing.

Well, on my way out for the evening feed. Oh, by the way, he's drinking water from a bucket now, so he's getting back to fully rehydrated too!

Talk to you all later!
