This may have been addressed - I've read all, but know so many things have been tossed out there, and I couldn't remember...

Could it be meningeal worm? That can cause paralysis of the back legs, and weakness... I know it's a long slow healing with that if the worming meds did take care of it
I thought of that but doesn't that come on more quickly and take them down more quickly. This started back in April/May.

When and if the pain comes you will know the right thing to do. Until then, just comfort her..hang out with her...and continue to do your best for her.

My 9 year old dog passed away last week. She was sick for quite some time but I never felt like she was so miserable that I needed to put her down. It wasn't until the last couple of hours of her life that I wish my DH was home. I would have let him put her down because I knew then that she was suffering. I drugged her up with everything I had and more than likely put her into an unconcious state of being and then she passed away. I KNEW it was time for her to go. It's not time to make that decision for Gretta until you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that she is suffering. Hang in there. You and Gretta are in my thoughts
I am so sorry about your dog I just recently lost one of my cats..Daisy And now all this with Gretta. your words helped me a lot! I am hoping to hear from hubby tonight so he is in the loop.

Michelle, this just came on me, as I am at my mother's (we are leaving early to go to Kansas in the morning, only spending one night there.) with her high speed DSL, and got to see your barn cam.

And I *again* went through a bunch of different stuff and different diseases, and symptoms, and took closer looks at things I had dismissed before.

For a wormer, have you used something with chlorsulon in it, such as using Ivomectin Plus, rather than plain Ivomectin? Because her symptoms would fit liver flukes. I know it has been drought this year, but weirder things have happened. I am looking at everything curable right now.

10/19 she got Valbazen. I did not think it was nec. but wanted to cover all bases. Her fecals have been clean for years. Gosh darn it I didn't write down the dose. I believe 10 cc per/100lbs so I gave her 6 cc since she weighs in at 57# The stuff bubbles a lot and you need to let it sit to get the proper dose into the goat. You can loose a couple cc's in bubbles.

~sighs~ It was a thought, at least. If she shows any improvement, it might have been that.

Okay, going back to looking up curable stuff. My eyes are starting to hurt.

Hate to sound like a broken record...

Neurological symptoms due to metabolic reasons ===> thiamin (B1) deficiency.

4-1/2 cc per 100 pounds bodyweight for 100 mg/ml thiamin
1 cc per 100 pounds bodyweight for 500 mg/ml thiamin

"Thiamine is an appropriate addition to treatment of any sick goat." -Tennessee Meat Goats

I think you have a mild case of polio due to whatever is wrong, plus possibly the oral tetracycline interfering with rumen bacteria.

Don't give up. Wishing you and Greta the best.

Yes, she needs Thiamin from the vet, it's a prescription. B-Complex will help if you absolutely have nothing else but only until you get the Thiamin. B-Complex isn't nearly enough for a deficiency that would be causing neurological.

You also need to make sure she is ruminating, do you know if she is? Are you giving her Priobios?

Thinking and praying for you and Gretta!!!!

I think what Nancy in GA is talking about is straight thiamine, it's RX from the vet. Maybe ask your vet that's coming in the a.m. about it. It might really help her. He might also sell you a single dose of the ivermectin Plus injectable to give orally like Caliann suggested because of the Chlorusion(sp?) in that particular wormer.

Ask the vet about Dex too Min, may help if he thinks there is swelling in her spine.

Fortified Vitamin B Complex that contains 100 mg/ml of thiamine 4-1/2 cc per 100 pounds bodyweight dosage is appropriate.

So I guess the dosage is about right, except it says to give every 6 hours.

Do you notice any change or improvement at all soon after the B injections?

I have only noticed change of progressing weakness No noticible reaction from injection. She is NOT lethargic. If anything she is on speed. Eyes wide open. Head up.

I was just really hoping it might be an easy fix, at least for the symptoms. Hope the new vet has some good suggestions.

I really feel for you, Minelson. Hang in there. I know how much you love your goaties.

This caught my eye in the Merck Vet Manual...

Infections of the nervous system often are the result of some injury to its protective barriers. In all species, direct extension of bacterial or mycotic infections to the CNS can develop from sinusitis, otitis media or interna, vertebral osteomyelitis, or diskospondylitis; these infections can also be secondary to migrating grass awns or other foreign bodies, deep bite wounds, or traumatic injuries adjacent to the head or spine.

It could have begun with the lump on her neck, possibly a bite? The thing with her throat/mouth may have been the infection migrating?

It sounds like you are providing her the very best supportive care. It burns my biscuits there is not more research/information about goats but you might check into supportive care for equine EPM. Lots of science there that could be transferred, what can be done for an animal through the long battle to recovery.
