I am really worried about Johne's, though. You don't know where she was when she was 2-4 months old, and it is a disease that stays dormant for years. If she hasn't had a Jone's test, I would get one.

I agree with this. If she were mine I'd be getting a Jonne's test asap. Since your vet doesn't know much about goats you may have to push for it. We've had bad experiences with Johne's and cattle. It's always one of the first things I think of now when an animal is unthrifty. I'm pretty sure Johne's animals exhibit a low albumin level and the low grade infection Gretta is showing could be the organism attacking her intestines.

I will be sending in a sample for Johnes testing...That is all I can say. I can't even "go there" in my brain or I will collapse.

CaliannG 10/21/12 07:11 PM

Understood hon. I am sorry!

Goat Servant 10/21/12 07:12 PM

Maybe a little far fetched here but what about the insulation she got into a while back?

At least if you get the test done that will be 1 less thing you have to worry about! Hang in there Min! You can do it & be tough for Gretta & the others. Hugs coming your way.

Funny you bring that up. I was just thinking about that today. When Cannon said get an Xray to see if there is something in her stomach I thought of that. Believe me my brain is going 1 million miles a minute.
I'm feeling very down tonight. She looks at me with those big eyes that are even bigger from the weight loss and I am jarred without showing it to her. I was hoping to see some improvement by now if that were to happen. She is up and about and eating off and on and not shivering but I am not seeing improvement. Actually she seems more unsteady but that could be because I am over analyzing her. My poor mama goat :Bawling:
And the thought of Frankie and Flossie not having their mom just kills me :Bawling:

JBarGFarmKeeper 10/21/12 11:43 PM

I think the x-ray is a good idea and I would do the Neomycin. It's oral. I did that with a standard LaMancha. The dosage is the same though.

Remember the "Sure Champ" I showed you in the meat goat barn that day? It had the little square dosing cup that comes with it. It has Vita-Ferm in it. It is a supplement but it too helps the gut to absorb as much nutrients as possible. Keep up the B-vits too.

Yes I still have the pamphlet from that stuff somewhere. I ordered the Neomycin.
She is not doing good today. She is very unsteady so I have to keep her in the stall. One of the others just bumps her and she falls down :( She seems dizzy. I'm calling the vet as soon as I get back from the post office.

where I want to 10/22/12 01:23 PM

Menelson are you able to view threads? its started if you need to add anything I have the same handle and Ill pm you my password.

Minelson 10/22/12 06:52 PM

Vet has not called back. I'm thinking that this has gone neurological the way she is acting. I wanted to try the Neomycin but I'm thinking it's too late and she needs to be put down. ohGod
We'll see what tomorrow brings. :Bawling:

Jyllie63 10/22/12 06:55 PM

I'm so sorry things aren't improving :( .

Clovers_Clan 10/22/12 07:04 PM

I hate to throw this out there, knowing how overwhelming this has been. Could some of these symptoms point to something neurological like meningeal worm?

Tallabred 10/22/12 07:06 PM

OH NO!!! I so wish that I had some good advice to give you. . . I know that you will do what is best :(

I am researching every idea everyone has. It is overwhelming but that is ok. It seems that Meningeal worms hit wet areas. We are in a major drought and have been for quite some time. I will run this across the vet I am working with though. Thank you!

Oh honey:( I'm thinking of you guys.

Sending nice warm hugs your way. Greta may surprise you in the morning and be up and perky looking for food. Try to rest and take care of yourself.

You have a lot of people praying for Greta and hoping for the best.

Carla

Minelson 10/22/12 08:56 PM

I just went down there to put a blanket on her. I gave her a very long belly rub that she seemed to enjoy. I also looked up high iron foods and Prunes are on the list and I have some! She ate 4 of them :)
She doesn't like the blanket so I left the heat lamp on. She is currently eating alfalfa with Frankie and Flossie.
Her movements are stiff and jerky like. It's hard to describe. She seems like she is rocking on a boat. And before when I was watching them, Frankie & Flossie were sleeping perfectly still. Gretta was non stop swaying and moving her head. I'm exhausted and emotionally spent. But I gave everyone a bit of attention tonight..that's all I got.

dbarjacres 10/22/12 09:06 PM

Did you say this started before the replamin? If after, I'm wondering if it could be copper toxicity. Look up what the Merck manual says about it. Just an idea as I saw you were doing replamin and onyx.

I'm pretty sure meningel worm acts fast. I don't know if she would have gone on this long.

Hugs from WI...

Minelson 10/22/12 09:22 PM

She did get copper in May. She may have accidently gotten a double dose too. I started the Replamin in August. Right now onyx is available but I have never seen her eat it. Sometimes they meander over to the horses mineral lick and lick on that for a bit. Sometimes I catch then eating minerals out of the donkeys stash. Do I have too many minerals around??eee-gads! :( :(

Minelson 10/22/12 09:28 PM

I thought that copper toxicity fried kidneys..her numbers came out ok on kidneys??

Donna1982 10/22/12 09:31 PM

Could she have an ear infection? I know when I get them I'm all off. I am praying for her.

LoneStrChic23 10/22/12 09:40 PM

Been following this and praying for y'all..... Hope you hear from the vet in the morning....

So sorry for you & Gretta :( Try to get some rest, you need it.

punchiepal 10/22/12 10:45 PM

:grouphug:My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Nancy_in_GA 10/23/12 01:21 AM

I would try giving her a B1(thiamin) injection and see if she improves any. If she does, then the vet may be on the right track. Something in her gut may be interfering with B1 production. If not, I don't believe it would do any harm.

Hoping for the best for Gretta.

The Tin Mom 10/23/12 06:45 AM

Oh, Minelson, I am so sorry! You must be worn out!

((((hugs))))

Backfourty,MI. 10/23/12 06:46 AM

I feel so helpless, I can't think of any new ideas that could be going on with Gretta but I'm sending hugs & strength for you both. I'll be praying real hard!
