I've had to be an accomplice of goat rape before too. ~sighs~ Hate doing it; still must be done. When it comes to doe "preferences", they tend to "prefer" to have grade experimentals, and that is NOT on the menu!

I don't think so--they're on and off in a flash. And the primary jumpers are two brothers who spend more time arguing with each other over an in-heat doe than actually 'breeding' her.

She definitely prefers Kerla but she prefers him from the other side of the fence.

We're putting her back with him today while she isn't in heat, so maybe (I hope) if she comes 'in' while she's with him she won't run and get that crazy racing thing started.

The real clincher is that I would much rather breed one of the Nubians than Katy. But we need only one milking doe per year and Katy's udder thing worries me. I keep doing the CMT and she tests okay--no lumps, no strings, no blood--but milking her teensy virgin teat is a job. We've tried ignoring it, hoping she'll dry up, and she doesn't. So I'm milking it out every third day.

Isn't life with goats...interesting?

For what it's worth, my buck pasture-breeds his girls, and the last time he had a new one she ran like a deer. He eventually wore her down, and now she adores him just like the rest. It was a little creepy looking, (think ZZ Top chasing down a little 15yr old girl...). I don't think he would have been able to if he had a bum leg, but if yours is in with your sound boy, she will probably eventually get bred.

The ZZ Top reference is quite a mental image! But you're right--Kerla is young and agile, so he could probably eventually run her down. Here's hoping, anyway.

The main herd is out in the field right now but when they come in, she's going to join Kerla. She shouldn't be back in heat until about the 26 (providing Martok's shot didn't do the trick), so they'll have plenty of time to get cozy before she cycles again.
