I'm Crossing to the Dark Side...

At least according to DH and our sons. They find LaManchas to be "creepy" with their absence of ears, but I think they're adorable. Of course, when I was offered a registered, trained, tested, healthy doe in milk for a fair price, how could I say no? So, this pretty girl will be joining our herd next week. I'm so very excited! :nanner:

The little guys in the next two pictures are actually ND wethers that we sold to the LaMancha's current owner earlier this year.

Oh she is pretty!! Congrats!

My Lamanchas are slowly taking over my herd, just love those goats! :D

I love my lamanchas. My dh and kids thought they looked wierd too, but now everyone loves them so much. They are the sweetest goats I've ever had.

She is very pretty.

Perhaps you could get her some prosthetic ears? ;)

Jeremiahc 08/31/12 09:50 PM

I'm not so sure about crossing over. ;) Her markings are pretty, looks like she's got eye brows.

Not to hijack the post; (it is relevant, I promise) but, do you all love your Lamanchas because of their ears - or lack there of? Or are they really that special - ears aside? Or maybe a combo of both. I'm one of those who are not too excited about the ears, but hear nothing but praise for the breed.

LoneStrChic23 08/31/12 10:03 PM

The lack of ears did NOT appeal to me....... I still think my Alpines are the most beautiful goats....

I like my Lamanchas because I get a milker with more butterfat (on average, just right under the percentages Nubians put out), but in volumes that can keep pace with my Alpines...

I like the open herd book that allows me to breed up to purebred status, I like the large gene pool....

I've found them to be more tolerant to our awful west Texas climate.

I love their long, level lactations & their quiet, easy going temperments.

Though the ears were, to me, off putting, they've grown on me :D

The lack of ears is what made me want them but their personalities is what made me fall in love with the bred. I have never met a goat breed that is more loving, in your face (in a good way). They are dogs in a goat suit. Take my little buck he helps me with chores everyday. Never more then a few feet away and this little goat is in his first rut. We had lamanhas who would rather sit on your lap then eat dinner. My very first LaMancha buck would lay on a blanket out with me while I read my book. He would curl up on my lap and lay his head on my shoulder and sleep. They love being with their humans.

My boyfriend was all about boers until he got to know the girls we have gotten. He now loves a little 6 month old doe i think more then me lol.

CaliannG 08/31/12 10:11 PM

Crystal, if you go completely to Lamanchas, may I have your Alpines? :)

Backfourty,MI. 08/31/12 10:28 PM

She is a very pretty doe although I prefer them with ears too.

They are calm and easy going and as friendly as friendly can be. In addition, they milk like there is no tomorrow. I have absolutely no complaints about my relaxed, earless herd. (Other than having to tell the general public on a constant basis that I really did not "cruelly" crop said ears....).

LOL, I'll give you "dibs" ;) I am going to be cutting at least 2 Alpines, but also at least one Lamancha after kidding season.....

If I could just get my hands on what I WANT in my Alpines, I'd be thrilled, but as it is now, my Alpines are a bit mish-mashed.....Austin is going to be the perfect compliment for some of my girls, but the others, I'm not so sure..... My Lamanchas though are solid, and going exactly the direction I want them to........ My Alpine case would be greatly improved if Texas had more breeders...... Think next year I'm going to have to break down and AI to bring in more of what I want.....

LaManchas are the best most friendliest goats in the world. Better than dogs for sure.

Welcome to the Dark Side! I crossed over this past spring. :) :) I love my baby mini-manchas!

Bambitski 09/01/12 10:17 AM

I love my baby MM. Just wish I could find some near me so that I could add a few more to my crew. ;) Latte is the sweetest, quietest, calmest, most easy to handle out of all of them. My Nigies are grouchy compared to her. One day, I will find more. I would even be happy with a full grown one, doesn't have to be mini. LOL

Latte is quiet??? Isn't that Pony's sister? Pony is loudest of them all...always talking and crying for a bottle! I guess he got the loudmouth genes ;)
But he is so sweet and loving! Last night I put a collar and leash on him for the 2nd time (first time was when I took him to the vet to be banded so that doesn't count) And he acted like an old pro at it. Like he was already trained! I was so proud of him. Tinker wasn't too bad either...but Pony was amazing!
:)

I keep telling people that goats evil is stored in the ears, that's why LMs are so nice. See, not the dark side at all ;)

Exactly. Oops, except for the West Texas climate thing, that doesn't apply here.

Has nothing to do with the ears(or lack thereof). I just love the Lamancha goat. Hardy, personable, great milkers, smart, sweet, whats not to love??!!

Not to say that I have never met a bad Lamancha, I have. But as a breed they are wonderful!!

I HATED their ears.......until I fell in love with the goat s and the ears mattered not at all after that. I now think they are beautiful.

Ranger 09/01/12 01:05 PM

What a lovely girl!!

Pony, for shame!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Their ears are wonderful! Prosthetic indeed. hurmph

LearningLife 09/03/12 02:35 PM

She's here! We just got her home, and she's such a sweetie. She seems to be settling in nicely. It's very funny to see her in the pasture with our little herd of Nigies. They all look so tiny now. I don't know if she's unusually large for a LaMancha, but beside our little girls, she's a giant! The ND's act like they want to challenge this strange newcomer, but I think they're scared to death of her. Every time she takes a step in their direction, they all bolt. She's so very calm, though. I've only heard one faint little vocalization from her since we picked her up, and she has already been nuzzling up to me and DH. I think I'm going to like this one!

DarleneJ 09/03/12 02:45 PM

She'll be your new favorite! Very pretty girl!

Oat Bucket Farm 09/03/12 03:45 PM

Very pretty! Welcome to the dark side, here have a cookie. :D

I never minded the lack of ears, but always wanted Nubians. Until we got our first LaMancha. After that, we sold off all of the Nubians and went all LaMancha.

Sweet, friendly, intelligent, calm, goats with wonderful milk and a long level lactation and will to milk. I miss my goats, loved my Manchas.

wintrrwolf 09/03/12 05:15 PM

nope I will never go the dark side. The longer the ears the better!! I love my nubs and ms.
Darkness has fallen here aaaahhhhh
