Piece of plywood, cut to fit. Cut a hole in the top to allow for a vent cover gotten from your handy-dandy, home improvement big box store.... Screw vent in.
Drill holes, evenly spaced, along the sides of the plywood. Put plywood on top of cage, get roll of wire and thread wire through plywood and cage edge, running-stitch style.
Should do for the roof.
Use the other half of your sheet of plywood for the front (the part that faces your bumper), and you won't have to worry about road debris cutting up your tarp and getting rocks in your goat's eyes.
Heavily tarp the back, and the sides. Should do the trick. The extra you would be spending is one sheet of cheap plywood, some wire (if you do not have it already). and one cheap vent cover.
Edited to add: Vent opening should be facing to the *rear*.

Is your DH mechanical? Have him take off the tail pipe, put an elbow and an extender so that the exhaust comes out the side, right behind the rear wheel. Then it will swirl up the side of the car while idling and the wheel will help disapate it while moving.

I don't know if we are set up to adjust the height of the platform safely. I will ask Dh.
We may have to figure out a way to get her in and out of the van without moving the luggage every time. I am at a real loss as to what to do about the exhaust swirling in. I had forgotten about that, and was thinking if we blocked the sides and back of the cage she would be okay. If the exhaust were on the other side, it might work, but with on-coming traffic, I wouldn't want to risk debris hitting her.
The carrier was fairly inexpensive, and we can use it for other things we need to haul (like luggage so the goat can fit in the van - LOL!) so if this doesn't work, it is no huge loss.
Thanks, all!

Put the rear seat in the mini van, take out the middle one. Set up the crate to take the goat in and out of the side door. One child in front, two in the very rear, goat in the middle. Luggage on the cargo carrier.

Hmmmmm! Will talk to Dh! These two combined should do the trick!
Caliann, you are talking about covering the entire cage, right? Do you think the vents in the top would keep her cool enough?

Okay, I feel really stupid! The cage only fits in through the back, so I hadn't even thought about loading the van in such a way that we could set it up with the goat getting out the side.
This is probably what we will do. Sigh. I had thought my goat limo was such a great idea. I don't think it will work for goats, but it will still work for luggage!

That does sound easier and safer for all! It IS a great idea....you just need to "fine tune" it a bit. With hauling animals there is usually some kind of v shaped buffer between the animals and the back of the vehicle. Look at some horse trailer designs that can be modified to mini!
I'll have to take a look at my tailpipe and see what direction it goes...

Seems like she will be getting a lot of fumes from the tailpipe too..I would put my luggage in the crate and keep the goat in the car.

I 100% agree with Minelson.
I'm not trying to attack, but I see this set up as a total disaster in reality, although it looks good to anyone who hasn't transported goats.
This is a dog crate meant to be used in a home.
* Let's say the goat stands like all goats do initially, in transit...vehicle hits bump, accidently stops fast, etc... = goat's weight shifts and falls against crate- crate will pop open at corners...goats falls out onto road =death or horrific injuries to goat, and possible horrific accident to other vehicles behind you.
*There's a reason vehicle's rear windows are not supposed to be opened while vehicle is in operation = fumes/ heat from exhaust.
*#1 Reason to not transport in open crate. Your goat should never be subjected to winds created by transport from bedding level to above the animals head to prevent pneumonia. The stress alone of the road rushing underneath-movement, and vehicles roaring past, and wind noise would be enough to cause shipping pneumonia/ possibly shock. Heck, shipping pneumonia happens to goats who are transported inside solid trailers or inside vehicles....or even moved just across the street ( it's from stress of changes).
Again, I'm not trying to attack but I do not see this idea as a good one even with a tarp wrapped around the crate- tarps snap and roar at highway speeds.
Just like goat fencing. If you value your animal- you will take the time to properly fence or transport that animal to avoid injury.
There's a reason you DO NOT see animals transported in this manner. Please reconsider/look for a different solution for that beautiful animal.

Hee hee...I used the binaculars to look. Mine points (exhaust pipe) directly out the side on the passenger side..
Here is what I use when I take all 3 of my mini's somewhere. lol! ..like to the vet for testing or when we moved (not very often!) When I have to take a single or double..they ride in the cab with me.
This just gave me a great idea for getting Gretta, Frankie and Fossie to bond with Pony and Tinker. Maybe I should put them all together in the trailer and take them for a ride!

If you look at my above post, you will see that we have revised the transport and the goat limo has been converted to a luggage limo. Taela is back in the van.
I do have to say that I am a lot embarrassed right now, so my tender feelings were not able to handle a post telling me even more why I am stupid, therefore I didn't even read your post yet. Maybe tomorrow when I am tough and strong again! The first sentence kind of told me that I will really feel like crawling under a rock by the time I am done. Not up to that now. But, since I am sure there may be someone else who thought this would work, I do appreciate your taking the time to list additional reasons why it won't. And, when I am tough and strong again, I will come back and learn.
Thanks!

Yeah, we will be happier, too. I was so blinded by the trees that I was bumping into the forest. I knew I was potentially missing something, part of the reason I posted here. I am so glad to have my goatie friends to steer me clear of that forest!

No need to crawl under a rock Tin mom...like you said, that is why you asked here. That other post only has stuff that you already heard. Except about the crate falling apart. But wait until tomorrow. I hate it when one of my great ideas gets crushed...I bet it happens to me a lot more than you! LOL!!

I doubt that! Thanks! I smiled again! Maybe the hole under that rock won't need to be as deep as I thought at first!

The never being wrong part, the hating being wrong like poison part, or the not being able to bring the name of the person that said that to mind part?

This woman is never wrong, there could be headlines on every major newspaper declaring her wrong, and she will still insist that she is right.

I've known people like that. I have been told before that the Encyclopedia Britanica is wrong, because the information contained within contradicted the person.

The Tin Mom, don't feel bad, when I first saw your pictures I thought it was a good idea too until different people started pointing out the bad. Glad your gonna put her in the van. Don't hide under a rock.
That poster didn't need to be so blunt, but that's how some people are.
