Yeah what she said. My dad and uncle never lubed up when going in to check on a cow. Go in after that baby.

I'm sorry. Huggs.

Hope Ms. Moo is fine and gives you lots of colostrum for the freezer and good milk for the humans.

From someone who after 4 years of breeding goats had to pull her first kid this year I spent 20 Minutes up in her and trying to figure out what was wrong and what was what. Then another 15 minutes getting him out. Once you get up in there and start feeling around everything people say is true, once you feel it you know what you are feeling. Especially when you get bit you know it is the mouth.

So sorry to hear about this it has been a hard year for so many with deaths.

I had a similar experience, with a dead bull calf two years in a row when my little Hereford heifer was bred by the large-calf-throwing bull in the next pasture. A dead calf is VERY, VERY hard to pull. I'm glad that you had the vet out, and hoping that the cow has a good recovery.

Sorry you lost the calf. At least you'll have milk.

I have to figure out what to do with all this milk now! I had already planned to get another calf because I knew there would be tons!

The calf was head first. I'm so worried about Ms Moo-how do I keep her from being sad? She knew-after we pulled him out (it took three grown women to get him out) she didn't even get up. She barely looked behind her to see what we were doing.

My grandpa saw my FB update and called to tell me to milk her 4-5 times a day for awhile and to rub down the dead calf with a towel that I should use if I find another calf so she will have the his scent on the new calf. Hope that works.

Then, when do I start milking her? Tonight, or has she been through enough? I was thinking I'd let her sleep tonight then head out there about 6am to collect the colostrum.

I'm so blue. She and I laid in that pasture for over 2 hours and as she would breathe through the contractions she would push her muzzle against my head. I hope she forgives me-and you'd better believe I'm looking for some sort of class to attend where I am taught to "go in after the baby" and figure out how to know what's wrong and how to fix it. I should have never waited an hour after her water broke to act. If I were skilled I could have stuck my hand in there after several unproductive contractions. SO is right-we are not prepared for what I've gotten us into.

~hugs~ Oh Shannon!

Hon, none of us are prepared the first time something bad happens. Believe me on this.

Milk her tonight. Her body is going to produce the milk no matter what, and you certainly don't want her experience a full, uncomfortable udder through the night. The poor gal has been through enough without having to deal with that.

~hugs again~ I am so sorry, hon.

Sorry, hon.

Soap is about the best lubricant you can use. In case you need to go in sometime in the future.

I went in and told DH what happened...he had been waiting on word bout if Ms. Moo was okay. He said:

"If she wants Ms. Moo to not be sad, she needs to rub the birth fluids on HERSELF, then go out and milk Ms. Moo, and let Ms. Moo lick the birth fluids off of her. Then, Ms. Moo will bond with HER and think SHE is her calf...and won't be sad anymore.

She should milk her tonight. Her post birthing hormones will be going crazy and filling her up, and she doesn't want Ms. Moo to be hurting through the night, so she should milk her completely dry and freeze it."
