I talked to my vet about X-rays, and she said the problem with them is that the bones don't develop real well until the very end of the pregnancy, so they often don't show up on X-rays.

So, the hunt is on for an affordable ultrasound, and then we will know how many are IN there. If it is just one, then my vet gets to be on standby in case there is a need for a C-Section.
If there are two, I will breathe a lot easier.

I dont mean to take your thread off topic here, but one baby is harder then two? I never would have guessed.

I had an ultrasound done on Cassie when she was SO huge. We could tell it was at least two. It was five. Ultrasounds late in pregnancy don't work well, the vet told me.

They don't work well in late pregnancy....but we can try. If two noses are found, that is more information than we had before.
Either Thursday or Friday a darling gentleman at TAMU will be ultrasounding her, and we'll see what we find out.
silverseeds, a single kid can grow way too large for an easy birth, so yes, two are better than one. Especially a single buckling who has had ALL the resources to get HUGE can cause birthing problems in does that are NOT first fresheners.
With a first freshener, we pray for twins or more. With a young first freshener, we pray harder. Three small ones coming out is far easier than one huge one that gets stuck in the birth canal.

She's a precocious little hussy, is what she is!
I have sat down with her and patiently explained:
"Okay, it is too late THIS time around, but as you grow up, you will need this information: You are a SEASONAL breeder. That means you go into heat in FALL, not *April*. I realize that, being young, a month seems like a year, but as you get older, you need to remember: As a SEASONAL breeder, you have your cycles in FALL."
She just chewed her cud and stared at me. I think she was asking, "What's FALL?"

I think you need to have "calendar time" like they do in kindergarten. Gather all your wee doelings around on the hay. Have a large colorful calendar and a pointer handy.
Start with days of the week: "Today is Tuesday, which means tomorrow will be...? All together...Wednesday! It is summer. Fall will be here soon." You could even compose a class song about being a seasonal breeder.
Really. It's all about educating the youth.

Caliann, after reading your posts about your girl I started looking at my doeling a little closer. We had an early rut in may and every thing was nuts in May and I thought maybe she at the sweet young age of 3 months had her first heat cycle so I locked her up in a stall away form the buck. I am beginning to wonder if I caught it in time. No udder development just a big belly. She is growing really well and is larger than the nigerian doe. I see the buck checking her occasionally and she wants nothing to do with her which I would expect......but I am beginning to wonder. I think I am going to biotrack her and if she is positive I will track down someone with an ultrasound also.
Anyone want to buy a buck. I don't want anymore babies until next season. He is a grade Toggenburg. Nicely mannered and polled.

Audra, I KNOW how confusing it is. Ummm, I am unhappy she was bred so young....ummm, baby goats! Great bloodlines baby goats!
Eerrr on the side of happiness. My vet says Cypress is big and healthy, and that she sees no reason why she shouldn't deliver healthy babies. So I am going with that. It IS unplanned, it is NOT what I would have done on purpose....but it is not a tragedy either, as long as the kidding goes well.
CJ, check the Biotracking site. They also send their tests to local labs, so check to see if you have a nearby location where you can drop off blood and get an answer the next day. It is easier than waiting on shipping.

Sigh. NONE of my does has shown a sign of a heat yet, and I'm starting to worry that I didn't move the buckling out soon enough a month ago.

What was the date your hubby had the buck in with the Girls Caliann? Beginning of April or near the end? Just wondering when we can expect adorable baby pictures!
I hope she has at least 2 doelings & a beautiful keeper buckling but 1 of each will be good!
Sure hope your girls all didn't decide to surprise you too Alice!

Katie, you might be ab;e to see beautiful baby pictures...ummm...tomorrow.
Not from Cypress, of course. Brie has bagged up and from DH's calculations, tomorrow is her due date.
Cypress, if I remember when I went to Kansas in spring, should be due the third week of September. I *think*. I'll have to go look at the dates.
So, you'll have LOTS of baby pictures to fulfill your addiction. Brie is due tomorrow, then Mardis Gras 3 weeks after that, then Cypress.
And then, the first week of October, I do the PLANNED breedings with the rest of the girls. Sheesh!
