Thanks to everyone for the advice. Much appreciated.

I'm thinking hernia as well. You know, its odd timing but I'd never seen a hernia of the stomach wall(on the lower side) before, but yesterday I was copper bolusing and hoof trimming a friends herd and she has a little doeling with a hernia in her side. A bulge exactly as you describe and if I gently palpate it, I can feel guts! So its odd timing to read this.

Eating a sickly animal is a complete no-no in my book. But a hernia does not make a sickly animal. Its a physical defect in a healthy animal. Sure don't want to breed it, but it should make fine eatin'!

Yes. On two. One of which is his dam, which was doing a fine job of rejecting him. He has been with the soft crowd for a couple of weeks, but the damage could have been done long before symptoms appeared, I suppose.
