I take that back. She is not saying "hello" to me like she was. I think I will have to get something for her first thing. Poor baby. :-(

I would worm her again with either Cydectin or Ivermectin also. Give her some Pepto or Kaopectalin is what the feed stores call it I believe & if she hasn't been on coccidosis prevention I would also start her on Di-Methox or Corid for that as well.

Hope she's feeling better soon.

I'm curious about how introducing antibiotic to a goat who has diarrhea is helpful? Wouldn't that disrupt helpful gut bacteria?

We're pretty cautious in our use of antibiotic here. Unless there's an obvious infection, it doesn't get used. Overuse creates resistant bacteria, and if you destroy the rumen's healthy "germs," the goat will be unable to digest food properly.

I think this would be a good time to add a reminder, I'm seeing a lot of over the counter human medicine being advised to be given, like Pepto, Kaopectate and I'm also seeing several new Newbie's on the board.. Please newbie's be advised where Pepto and Kaopectacte are both alright when given to goats, there is one over the counter med that MUST NOT BE GIVEN TO GOATS> IMODIUM AD.. Please make note of this.. Immodium AD - Do NOT use this product for diarrhea or anything else on goats. It can stop the peristaltic action of the gut and cause quick and horrible death.

Just remember that goats can go down much faster that other animals. So you don't want to think it's just "the runs" and think you have a few days to treat it. I'm not saying you think that, but it is a common new goat owner mistake. When they show signs of illness you want to jump on it quickly and knock the problem out.

The Pepto is to treat the diarrhea itself.
The Ivermectin or Cydectin is to deworm. (Goats are very prone to worms)
And then Albon or Di-Methox is to treat for Cocci.( Cocci is common problem and can do permanent damage without showing visual signs. Diarrhea is a common sign)

Kim is so right. Don't let it ride. One of our best and favorite does went from "off and not quite right" to dead within 36 hours a week ago today. I waited too long to ask for help here and I found out too late to call the vet. They cross the rainbow bridge very fast once they put that first hoof on it....

Please keep us updated on your doeling.

Hoping that she is doing better now.

Thank you all! She was eating a good bit of mineral and baking soda this am and her poop was almost perfect. I appreciate the advice and will keep it for later!

Signed,

Michell - a very new Newbie

Glad she's doing so much better. It could have been too much lush green stuff she was eating or maybe eating wet pasture too early in the morning but at least she's back to acting & pooping normal now.
