So is your neighbor a little ticked off at your goats???

I went this year and put up a flimsy fence to keep my dog out. Didnt do it last year and nothing grew. But for next year since the goats will be full grown, I already have plans for a permanent fence for it and the fruit tree area. They are in a good fenced in area, but I am planning on them getting out. If I plan it, maybe it wont happen and they will stay in. LOL

BAHAHA!!! Oh, sorry, you were serious :P

Reminds me. I used to have a pet deer. We tried things to keep him out of the garden.. I once put irish spring soap in the garden because that was supposed to keep them out. He ATE the soap.

However, those motion activated sprinklers, while kinda pricey, do work. My goats have been chewing on our satellite wires (Boy I sound like a hick!) and I put one of those up there and I got the joy of watching Josie run like like a bear was hot on her heels. Entertaining Course, I did get water jetted up my nose while setting it up. So there are drawbacks.

Thanks for the laughs! The thing that really gets me is they have about 10 acres of woods and they want to be in the yard eating. Then they mosy on over to the garden and start eating (the grass, ahem) and my pepper plants! nothing else, just the peppers (and grass, ahem). Oh, and my asparagus.

I think i will get a high powered squirt gun and get them from the porch when they come out of the woods.

If i did not have a shallow well i would set up a sprinkler that was motion activated.

Yea, they don't got out in the woods because they don't feel safe. They want to stay within sight of the house. Same deal with mine

I have chain link fence. It wasn't only the goats and chickens but the dogs that ate all my tomatoes.

The one thing that worked somewhat for me was to make a very heavy manure tea (it was more like a paste) from their own FRESH manure and then coat thoroughly, a few plants I wanted them to stay away from when they were grazing in a given area. It had to be replaced after every rain. I would not do this to a garden because aside from the fresh manure on food part of it, I don't think the plants would be able to get enough light if they had that much manure on their leaves every day.

Double ditto here.

We put up more electric fence this spring, which they do respect...for now? We continued it around the pasture really low, because they could squeeze under the fence.

Now they love love love being with me when I'm outside and they can see me in the garden from the pasture but they haven't mehhhed at me in the garden yet, lol.

We might be ok

I remember reading an article, maybe Mother Earth News, about someone putting up a fishing line fence for deer that worked. They pulled it tight at foot intervals around the perimeter of the garden, I think, and the deer ran into this invisible force field which scared them away. Goats aren't naturally on edge like deer so I don't know if it would work for them. If you're looking for a cheap fence you would be out some cheap fishing line and whatever you used for posts. There is no way I could afford to fence in all of my gardens right now. Just thinking out loud...
