They had a problem occur and since shes been so open about it probably did catch it and did take care of the problem properly. I wouldnt condemn the whole herd because of that one incident. Id rather deal with her than some one who might not be so forthcoming in these tough market times when you need money and not too many people have it.
If she vaccinates you need to wait at least two weeks before testing and see where that takes you. If you vaccinate a dog for parvo for at least a week after they will test positive for the virus.

I did send her an email back to ask some more questions. Someone else pointed that out to me as well Cannon that at least she does care & vaccinates to keep her herd clean. If she didn't think they were CL free she probably wouldn't have told me about the abcess.
I thought you needed to wait 2 years to test for CL after they've been vaccinated for it?

That sounds like a buckling I was looking at. Except they told me they were CAE free but didn't test. I have the same concerns about the CL situation. I haven't ruled him out but since I'm not breeding until August, I'm still looking.

it could take two years not to show a strong positive but you can get an idea in a couple weeks but nothings even certain on those test. Has she even vaccinated him and doesnt it take multiple doses to be effective? I have not had a great deal of time to spend on here to read the post. If so and shes only gave him one dose than you might be ok that away to test.
I guess like any goat even tested goats its a gamble its a matter of how bad you want him.

Wish you were looking for full-size stock. I have a couple of stone gorgeous bucklings this year...

I believe he just got his booster shot for CD & T, Phneumonia & CL vaccines. He's about 8 weeks old now.
I asked her if they got the lump tested after they took it out but I guess her son is in the hospital right now so she hasn't gotten back to me yet.

I don't know how far your wanting to travel but I found another breeder in Indiana. Still Waters Farm, her name is Angie Mercer. I am waiting for her does' to kid in June to see what she has, she does test, vaccinate for CD & T, disbuds, & registers her goats.
I know she has an F# buckling for sale & a F2 adult buck that she is selling because she retained his F# buckling from this year.

A single dose of the CL vaccine is not going to spoil a CL test for life.
If the buckling is really nice, from a herd that obviously cares about disease, I would be willing to risk it. However, it was a decision I have already had to make when I got the does from the TAMU herd, as they also use the vaccine.
You can get a baseline idea of where the vaccination titers stand by testing as soon as you get him, knowing that he will likely show a REALLY high titer on the test....and then test 2 months later, and see if the titer is lower.
Honestly, Katie, if they only ever had the ONE abscess 4 years ago, and they lanced and drained that abscess and then sold off the animal, and they haven't had any abscesses since then, and have vaccinated, I would feel pretty confident about this boy. It seems to me that the owners both know what disease looks like, and have taken measures to eradicate disease from their herd.
Even though they didn't have the abscess tested, if it was something like pastuerella, and they sent the goat to the sale barn over it, chances are if ANY other lump had come up, they would have reacted with the same severity. That tells me that they haven't even had abscesses caused by other diseases.
If that is the ONLY fear that you have, then I think you should overcome it. If there are other things that are making your guts tell you "Oh, no, no, no!", then I would listen to them.

Thanks everyone, I know I seem to freak out over some things, I need to learn to be a little calmer. She will get back with me when she can, her son is sick right now & I will talk to her some more.
