Just had to put Trinity down... :(

This morning, she was as bouncy as ever, still seeming content to wear the first few nipple-fuls of milk on her face, neck, and back. She butted the bottle with vigor, as usual, and drained the 20oz bottle without coming up for air. She was always the 'keg-killer'.

This afternoon, at mid-day feeding, she refused the bottle entirely, and was standing alone, off to one side. COMPLETELY unlike her. Thus started FOUR HOURS of my attempts to prevent bloat. Walking, vegetable oil drench, vegetable oil with activated charcoal, oil with baking soda... warm water enemas, 1cc banamine for the pain, 36ccs total of CD&T (12 in either side, 12 down the hatch), massaging, patting, walking, enemas, massaging, patting, walking, drenching... I also tried 4ccs Pen-G orally and 5ccs Vitamin C sub-cu.

Pony got home around 5:30 and took over, adding Dexamethasone and BoSe to the mix. The cocktails so far relieved the pain some, but not enough to counter the shock of a 16ga needle to the rumen, which did let off some air, but not much, and she kicked the needle out. I continued walking and massaging her until about 6pm, when Pony noted that it looked like she was going down, but I didn't agree. She would still stand and walk, though, and was not crying out from pain, wasn't down from it. I couldn't do it, so I opted to keep her on watch, and make my decision tonight.

About 20 minutes ago, she started with the rhythmic cries that often herald a kid in distress or great pain. She'd worked her way in between the water bucket and the wall in the shed, so I untangled her and brought her outside. She stood briefly, walked a bit, then laid down and started crying again. I'd had enough, and I'm sure she had, too. She rests in the garden tonight.

Just yesterday, the same thing happened to Seamus, but the Banamine and C&D OzarkJewels' sister helped introduce did him up just fine. The same stuff a day later, in a different goat... no dice.

I always thought Trinny was the one I never had to worry about. She was always a great feeder, first on her feet, always there chewing my pant leg or suckling my finger. But this stuff can go SO DANG FAST...

:Bawling:

Oh no! I'm so sorry! :( How awful.

Backfourty,MI. 03/29/12 08:30 PM

I am so very sorry you lost her. Poor little thing was a real trooper but sometimes their just too little to fight the big battles I think. Sounds like you were doing everything possible.
Sending Big Hugs to you & Pony as I'm sure your both heartbroken.

Lizza 03/29/12 08:31 PM

I'm so sorry, we lost a doeling today too, always so sad :(

Pony 03/29/12 08:33 PM

I hate bloat.

I loved little Trinity, and I am so proud of Nick for fighting so hard for her. He did everything according to the book, and then some. Worked for Seamus, didn't work for Trinity.

Goats. They can bring you some of the highest highs and the lowest lows in life. For me, lower than losing Trinity is watching Nick go through it... He did right by that doeling. He worked his buns off to save her, and when there was no hope, he did the right thing, too.

Ouch ouch ouch...

Pony 03/29/12 08:36 PM

Morningstar, so sorry for your loss. Even though we love the bucklings, losing doelings seems harder (esp in a heavily buckling year)..

Do we let ourselves get more attached to them?

Ranger 03/29/12 08:52 PM

Oh Nick and Pony, I'm so sorry. You certainly did everything that you could, and she knew that the people she loved were there for her. Big hugs to you both.

Morningstar, I'm sorry for the loss of your girl, too. Hugs to you.

Pony 03/30/12 09:36 AM

As a friend noted, this is one of the hard parts of animal husbandry that folks often don't consider. Doing the Right Thing is often painful.

So very sorry.

Oh no...so sorry for your loss.

Not judging at all..just need to ask out of my ignorance. I have a doe due to kid in less than 7 weeks. In your case being as you were bottle feeding, do you know the cause of the bloat?

dbarjacres 03/30/12 10:20 AM

Sorry for the loss.

I know, it is harder to loose a doeling, the bucklings are never going to live with us long term, this year they are all going for meat. I was keeping all the doelings from this particular doe. Even when I sell doelings I usually get updates and pictures, which I love.

Sorry Pony about your loss, it is the hard part of having a farm. I shouldn't have gotten attached to mine since she was never right since birth and she only lived about 24 hours but it's hard when you cuddle something and tube feed them, you just hold out hope.

Drewusa81 03/30/12 11:51 AM

So sorry :(

Donna1982 03/30/12 12:36 PM

I am so sorry for your loss. I agree this is the hardest part of owning any animal. Ones that die are hard but putting one down I think is the worst.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

GoldenWood Farm 03/30/12 01:48 PM

I am so sorry you guys :(. You gave her the best shot at life and even though it was cut short it sounded like she had a great one. You are so right though that doing the right thing can sometimes be the hardest thing. (((((hugs))))))

If it wasn't for you and Laura, we wouldn't still have Seamus - and you were such an incredible help through the whole ordeal with both him and Trinity. Not enough words in the language to say "THANK YOU!"

The Tin Mom 03/30/12 03:46 PM

So, sorry Pony! It is always so hard to loose one! Especially one that has stolen your heart!

Nick did a great job!

((hugs))

I've followed the story of these babies and you two have done everything humanely possible. Sometimes it's just not meant to be. I'm so sorry... :(

Or the FF with the best teats, that gives the most milk that only had bucklings when she freshened the ONE time and that your husband loves the most that he calls "his goat". DD(16) found her Thursday morning...down. I am within days of giving birth...out in the milk barn rolling her back and forth, drenching with baking soda, giving C&D antitioxin orally and SQ. Banamine both ways. Rubbing, rubbing, rubbing. Only to lose her in my arms after about an hour of this. I broke down into puddle on the ground and they literally drug me to the house.

I am sorry, Nick, and and know what you have invested in those babies the last few weeks. The highest highs and the lowest lows....yes.

Oh, I am so sorry! It's the ones that you love best, and work on for HOURS in their distress...

Goats. The best and worst of times.
