Wow. That is tough. I am so sorry and I agree with the others that you did the best you could do and you shouldn't blame yourself. Sounds like he had a wonderful life with you.

My condolences.
Alice, did you ever find out what happened to your buck? It may give Shygal and everyone else an idea of what to watch for.

Shygal,
I am so sorry for your loss. It sounds like Merlin had a great life with you.
I lost my LaMancha doe last Friday. I know how much it hurts. <<Hugs>>

Oh that sounds a lot like it but he didnt ever go off his feed. Was there anything I could have done if that was it? It seemed like it happened in a matter of an hour or so, my son said he saw him walking around and eating like normal maybe an hour before I got home
They had the vaccine, I was reading in another thread to not give the CD&T, did I kill him by giving it? It was a couple months ago
He sounded like he was full of fluid

The reason I was asking if you vaccinate with CD & T is when my special wether died suddenly(fine that evening, dead the next morning-never off feed & no signs of anything at all wrong) I took him for the necropsy & my vet told me it was from clostridial perifregens(Sp?).
I am still so sorry for you. I'm glad I did the necropsy though because I have faithfully given the CD & T's since & never had that problem again & it's been about 3 years. It was a very hard lesson for me & I'll never forget. I still to this day blame myself for Murphy's death because I didn't think the vaccine was needed.

CD&T vaccine won't kill animals.
If it did, most peoples herds would be dead.
It could have also been Listeriosis from a little moldy feed.
The thing about both goats and sheep is often, by the time they SHOW symptoms, it's already too late

Shygal,
I am so so sorry for the loss of your goat friend. One thing I know about you for sure is how much you love your goats and cared for them, Merlin was no exception. Prayers and hugs are headed your way.

First off.. NO.. you didn't kill him by giving him CD&T vaccines.. It may have been entro (the CD part of the vaccine.. but that only protects from two types) So. it *could* have been one of the others.. or something totally different.. you may never know.. but take comfort in knowing that you did NOTHING wrong... sometimes bad stuff just happens...
again, so sorry
susie, mo ozarks

No, you didn't kill him with the vaccine and you probably really couldn't have saved him at all, he went too fast. That's the sucky thing about livestock, they are prey, other animals eat them, so they only show signs of weakness when they are almost dead. My daughter is a pre-vet student and one of her teachers told her that sadly by the time people call you out to see their livestock they won't need a vet, they'll need a priest. That's why herd management is so important.
I literally killed my goat, literally, it was all my fault (my favorite goat). This was not your fault, you did nothing wrong, at all. Unless you did a necropsy you won't know. With only two wethers I figured you wouldn't be paying for one (they are around $120 or so at my university). When you have a herd you have to do a necropsy (well you should) because you don't want to loose anymore animals and unless it's done you'll never truly know. It's just that Enterotoxemia kills very fast like that. It's only a guessing game.
I am so sorry, it is probably the hardest thing about having livestock. We lost our dairy cow this fall (acorn poisoning, by the time she showed signs she was too far gone, her kidney's ended up failing). My girls still cried last month when her calf should have been born, cried giant buckets of tears. Since we have dairy animals we are almost closer to our goats/cows then we are to our indoor animals, it's such a personal relationship, it just breaks your heart to loose them.
