I'm sorry for your loss. Is there anyone who could do a necropsy reasonably so you would know what happened?

Thanks everyone, we are all still reeling from it all. I think we are going to get out of goats at least until I deliver our human baby and revisit in the spring. I can't see bringing home another new goat when I might be incapacitated in a couple weeks

I didn't know you were pregnant. When are you due? So do you just have the Saanen goat now?

My EDD is 08/09 but I'll probably go sooner.

Yeah, just the Saanen wether. I think we'll find him a home or maybe sell him.

I also think I know what she died of.....at least immediately. The vet gave us instruction to give 120cc of CMPK all at once over several different site and I think she had a heart attack from it. I found some detail online this morning that said 30 cc over multiple sites every 2 hours. So logging that info away for the next time we have goats so we don't make that mistake again

Maybe you can find another wether to be his friend and keep him. Or maybe someone can foster him until next spring. I just hate for you to loose both of them Try not to make any decisions until the shock of loosing her wears off a bit.

Oh wow I did not know they could get heart attacks from that. Off to do more research on the stuff.

I'm so sorry that all you went through- although I didn't have something to offer, I was following and rooting for both of you.

Wow, 120cc all at 1 time is an awful lot! I am so sorry you lost her after trying so hard & doing everything you could to save her. It is so heart breaking but I bet that wether will bring you lots of joy & you could get a young wethered buddy for him for not too much probly & have them to make you smile.
Like Minelson said, don't make any drastic decisions. We lost a doe once & I was ready to sell all the rest. Hubby talked me out of it & to this day I'm still glad he did.

I just found your thread. ((hugs))

I'm so sorry you lost her, especially after all the effort you went thru in attempts to help her.

I agree with the others. This is not the time to make decisions. Just take care of yourself, have a healthy 2-legged baby and enjoy that Saanen weather for the time being.

The saanen, I thought for sure would be miserable....he's surprisingly not. He's very happy to see us but he's not the panicking crying mess I was sure he's going to be. I think as long as he's not miserable he'll stay here. I don't really have extra to buy him a friend right now but I'll keep my eyes peeled for a wethered friend

So sorry. I didn't see this until just now but I don't think I could have helped even if........

If it helps at all, I highly doubt the CMPK killed her. I have given many does 120 ccs sq all at one time, in the past.....They were all fine. The heart attacks come if its given *IV* too fast. Have had to watch for the very carefully when IVing CMPK to down milk fever cows in the past. If you give too much or too fast in the vein, you will get an immediate heart attack, there is no time between giving it and death. If it reaches the heart too fast/too much, they die.
That said, 120 ccs is a lot. I usually give 60 ccs at a time.
That probably doesn't help right now, I am sorry.
