Coyote whelped under porch
I guess that is how you would say she had "puppies"
So now I know why I have had such a problem with them. They were discovered after a 3 year old granddaughter told the grandpa (living about 2 football fields from my house) that she "wanted to hold the puppies" Good thing he investigated. Can you imagine if they would've attacked her? Well the mom was coyote was dispatched but the 5 to 8 pups (half grown) scattered. So now, they are looking for momma. They are going to be hungry and they are going to break into what ever they can find and kill as many what evers as they can... whether its my house or someone elses. The young cougar problem? Well that may be some good news... The vultures are still hanging in the area that I oringinally saw them go to, so my hubby & I may try to go search the area tomorrow... The bob cat... well he is still an issue. We have spent every night camping in the new horse trailer waiting for him to come back. I took a little nap & when I woke up I saw him walking away. No chance to get a good shot.:bash: So, I came in here to warm up and :kung: then I don't know if I will go back out and keep hubby company or get to work on chores. |
Really hope you are positive it was a coyote. Never heard of any of them doing that

I'm waiting for the grizzly bear to appear next.

Maybe it was the chupacabra.

No body in the area would've thought twice about them being so close, they are usually heard and not seen... But the proof is the dead momma coyote. Also, the coyotes were EVERYWHERE last night. It was so spooky. You could never see them. Just hear them just out of range of the lights.
This has been going on for so long I feel like a whiney butt. We live right next to the rail road tracks with nothing but brush and the lake on the other side... We have NEVER had this happen... I've been here over 14 years. I will be so glad to get my barn up and be able to close it up at night. Plus my LGD was doing a great job last night... the coyotes were the reason I got him. I was unaware of my resident kitty's at the time. The funny thing is we were all joking about The Wizard of Oz... just to relieve some of the tension of all the sleepless nights around here... but I never thought of telling everyone that a chupacabra is to blame! lol |
You have a LGD and had a coyote living under your porch?
|
Coyotes will come right up into your garage and steal you cocoker spaniel while you're unloading your groceries. They don't care if the building is occupied.
|
Yikes!! When does Bigfoot show up?! Note to self: wear full armor when visiting mpete!!!
Seriously, though, what a flipping mess. Are your fences secure? Make sure you go around and pin the bottom of the wire down so nothing can scurry under it. Do you keep the goats stalled at night? |

With the railroad tracks & the lake on the other side doesn't sound like alot of neighbors close by but so many places have more & more subdivisions, strip malls, etc. going up that the wildlife is getting pushed further & further to places they don't usually live. Maybe that has something to do with why you've never had these problems before & now all kinds of wild critters hanging around.
Or maybe they are all just figuring out that you have supper out there in your back yard for them. Sure hope things settle down for you. |
One thing I learned in my visit to CA several years ago is that CA coyotes are different from GA coyotes. In GA you hear coyotes but almost never see them, in CA the coyotes come right into the neighborhoods and you can see lots of coyotes walking down the street in the morning. It was a big shock to me to see coyotes so close to people, but seeing that the OP is in CA and remembering that experience, I can believe that CA coyotes would whelp under people's porches.

Weve had coyotes come up into the pasture during the day with people outside to get chickens...you would be surprised what they get used to. And when they are hungry :O
|
I have a sister that lives in San Diego & she told me she was walking early one morning & seen a mountain lion on the roof of someone's house so nothing would surprise me out there in CA.

How old are the pups? If they are very young it is unlikely that any of them will survive without mom...

I understand parts of New York City have coyote problems.

I'm sorry they are being problematic. |
Can you call animal control, or set traps? I would not want a litter of young coyotes thinking that my porch is their den...
|
wish you would have called me. I'd love to have another coyote pup to raise as a dog. Had one inthe 50's growing up. Made a good dog.

I do believe the OP especially after two days ago. I live in VA and have never found a coyote den, until this past Saturday. I went over one of my neighbors houses and as we walked down the steep side of a hill I walked right within 20 feet of a fresh den. The photos are on my phone but not sure how to put them on here. This den was just 150' from his back door on the side of a cliff in heavy woods. The soil there is sandy and it was still bright with tracks on top of tracks of them leaving and entering the den. Nothing came out and I feel it is a bit to early for them to already have a litter in there. There was also signs of a fresh deer kill 30 feet from the den. Likely was a young one as all that was left was a 3' circle of deer hair with one clump left with a chunk of flesh attached. Photo also on phone. Then about another 15' away was some additional deer hair.
Many see them or hear them where I live but they seem to be getting more used to being visible and around people. My neighbor also has a large dog that stays inside a 1/2 acre fence immediately around his house so I guess the coyotes don't mind being so close. I have young goat kids right now and we are about 1/8 mile away from the den site. Interesting to hear from others about their experiences. |
Oldarock I know people that breed and sell them legally if you are serious and a legal state. I will tell you though that you got lucky or you had a dog before. Coyotes usually are nippy and flighty and will wet themselves around anyone but who raised them. They are no fun but some people like them.

Last year I was having trouble with a fox taking my chickens. I brought home a donkey thinking she would keep the fox out of the field. Before long the donkey was grazing right next to the fox as the fox slept in the sun. Turned out she was a momma fox, and had her pups in the side of an unused barn, in the same area the donkey was in.
They sure were cute, and it sure hurt DH to shoot them. He only got a couple, though, and the rest scattered. Never got the mom, as far as I recall. |
