Helps the breeder remember and other people to see who the parents are. Generally in my herd, the sire's name would be referred to somehow and the dam line had a theme- herbs, flowers, spices, etc. So "Wisdom's Way M Katydid" meant that she was bred by me as she had my herd name, her sire (the M) was Three Rings Magellan and her dam was from my insect line as she was Cricket's daughter. "Wisdom's Way R Junebug" was also out of Cricket, but she was a daughter of Iroquois KC Reflex, thus the R.
When you have 30-40 or more kids born every year, it is possible to forget things such as Katydid and Junebug being half sisters, especially since they looked so different. Names help me to remember, and it also helps potential buyers to see at a glance without looking over the pedigree, who the sire might be and which dam line was used.
