WARNING!! These people here really are ENABLERS!!!!
Even if you are just looking for something to clear brush,
DO NOT JUST GO GET ANY OLE GOAT, START WITH HEALTH ANIMALS! try to not bring problems to your property.
Breed will be up to you to decide. I want milk and meat, so I chose nubian.

I hear ya... I do plan on getting from a reputable source when the time comes. Not just any 'ole Craigslist listing. At this point I will probably start with a couple of wethers to get a feel for things, then down the road a breeding pair... Many more questions to come - thanks all for all of the input!

Spike, you are obviously a person of high intelligence and discerning taste in goats.
Nubians are not for everyone, but by golly! They sure are MY favorite breed!

Myotonic or another name some call them is Fainting goats are also a meat breed but not as big as Boers I don't believe.
I'd start with a couple wethers of any breed you like the looks of & see how you like having goats period. How your fencing holds up, worming, hoove trimming, etc. then decide on a specific meat breed you like. At least then you'll have hands on goat care & general knowledge.

Ha, what kind of cud are you chewing? Everyone knows that LaManchas, the earless wonders of the goat world, are the best!

I haven't read all of these posts, so sorry if this has already been said, but one thing to note from my personal experience is that boers are LOUD as all heck. If you have neighbors, or if you don't like to hear screaming goats all day, you might want to think about a different breed. They do make amazing sausage, though...
Also, if you breed female goats and let them raise their kids, you will not have to milk them. That is what most people do who keep meat goats. You only have to milk them if you separate the kids.

Thank you Pony and right back at ya!
FrogTaco, I've been totally smoke free for 2 years!
Oat Bucket Farm, today's cud would be Cushaw squash from the root cellar with butter and brown sugar, scrambled free range eggs, and home made wheat toast! MMMMM Good (well at least the first time around)

If you don't want to breed them and want them for brush, then possibly eating, I would look for freshly weaned wethers (castrated males) right around when all the green starts growing in your area - let them eat it until it quits growing, then slaughter them. Wash, rinse, and repeat.
|
^this, because maintenance (trimming, deworming, supplements, etc) is greatly reduced. Overwintering is the hard part.

^ and this, because they just are.
Sometimes you can get dairy goat wethers for next to nothing. They don't get quite as heavy as the boers, but eat brush real nice still. Often they are sold as bottle babies though, and you probably don't want that.

Hi Steve;
You are so very fortunate to be in Maine. Saint Albans, Maine is the home to the one and only Goat School. We do two schools here at our farm: one in June and the other in October. We also go all over the United States. Just got back from doing a school in Los Angeles a couple weeks ago. Check our our website www.goatschool.com for more information.
Ken.
