I got yelled at/banned at one 'pet' forum because I said if an opportunity ever arose to butcher an old unwanted/neglected horse for people/dog food, I'd do it. I'm not against butchering horses, but a lot of people are no matter what. Heck, I get some people that don't like that I put down our own pets/animals with a .22 in the backyard.

I think it all depends on the methods used to raise animals. I can understand there's neglect and abuse and inhumane slaughter - but that doesn't mean you can condemn all breeders or animal product users.

I once ONCE tried to adopt a cat through a rescue group and my applacation was not approve because not every single animal I owned was altered. Even though the cat I was trying to adopt was. I then went to a breeder and spent the same amount on a kitten. How crazy can they get?

Yup, I can't adopt from some places either because I raise many kinds of animals. Doesn't matter that any 'extras' are consumed in some way - either sales or butchered or fed to another animal. Our pets - dogs/cats - are neutered, and are obviously not 'eaten'.

Honestly, shelters/rescues ought to be happy that someone WANTS to take care of the cat, and be more than happy to place it once it's spayed/neutered. Too many cats need help (including the several feral cats outside my apt) but not enough people want them bad enough to jump through flaming hoops or over spiked pits to get one. To me, a home that feeds and cares for basic needs (including vet care OR humanely putting the animal down if money is too tight for vet care) is better than no home at all, and no money/time/cage space at rescues to bring in other needy animals.

I was denied a cat adoption because it wouldn't be a strictly indoor cat. I asked why the cat couldn't go out. They said it was because it could get diseases or hit by a car. I said, "So could you. Why do you leave your house?" I was asked to leave. I went to the pound and adopted my 3 legged, mentally special kitty, Trinity. I'm a horrible pet owner though. I let her outside. I won't eat her though so I guess I'm kind of okay.

Although I don't like or approve of horse slaughter, it does beat starving to death.
Many countries eat dogs and cats - I find that horrifying, but in those countries, a timely death beats the conditions under which they would live.

It is all about being humane.
