Very sorry. I lost my doe, Penny, last November very suddenly as well. She's actually still my avatar. Her's was from silent pnuemonia. It was just a few hours from when she was sick to when she was dead. She had had a case of pnuemonia maybe three weeks earlier and seemed to be over it. Then the sudden, deadly relapse.

Thank you all for your condolences. Last night I put baking soda out, something my goats never touch hardly and they all ate some and everyone is fine this morning so far, its still a bit dark but they are all standing their wanting breakfast and all are accounted for.
Looking back maybe she had a heart problem or something, she was always so mellow and I just thought it was her personality. I know her eyes where nice and dark pink just the other day. We have had pneumonia in our herd but oddly shes never been symptomatic and all get vaccinated but it could of been, could have been several things.

Rest in peace my girl..

Oh no! I'm so sorry. I agree, not knowing will tend to make your mind run in circles for a while.

The " head thrown back and looks like the animal fell while running" is just from the last moment of death. An animal will oft times stretch way out and paddle as they pass.

Could have been pnemonia, too. I wouldn't discount those chery leaves, not the ones last week but new leaves maybe fallen or blown in the pasture last night or today.

Both can kill pretty quickly.

I'm sorry you lost Regina.

Cannon Farms, what do you vaccinate with? Entero can cause sudden death. I know of two bucks in the Athens, GA area that were normal one evening and found dead the next morning. One buck was sent off for necropsy and evidence of entero was found (even though there wasn't any diarrhea to speak of). Clostridium Sordelli was cultured.

I use goat CDT and also Cam has tought me to use the other tetanus as well.
Now, something on my mind, I had been drying her up and I had not milked her in a few days but he udder never was full to the point I felt she needed it, any chance that could of caused something?

I would have given anything if I could have taken her to Athens and found out.

Cannon,

CD&T does not cover all the strains of Clostridium found in Georgia. The bucks that died suddenly had been vaccinated, but died of a strain not covered by the vaccine. Clostridium Sordelli was isolated by the lab. This strain is found in the seven and eight way vaccines.

I am so sorry. Not knowing what the cause was would drive me nuts, I wish it was something more obvious so that could at least alleviate that part of it. Take care of yourself and once again I am sorry for your loss.

I do think that if it were feed related, it would have taken more time and you would have noticed her being ill. I say that just because it seems like the feed issue would have been mild because you didn't notice anything particular with her hay or grain and none of the other animals show any sign of illness.

I have had a few animals pass on mysteriously. It happens. I just watch closely for any signs of anything out of the ordinary with the rest of the animals and if I notice something, I call the vet out. In all the cases, it was an isolated incident and wasn't some infectious disease or management problem.

It's hard not to feel guilty too. As the human, we feel we should be in control and preventing these types of things from happening to our animals but in reality, we can't prevent everything.
