I just posted a new thread about a Thiamine question before I read this post.
So many things that are mentioned here I am experiencing with my doeling.
Scares the out of me.
Now I have to google Mycoplasma haemolama and all that.

Every time I feel like I am getting a handle on things something else pops up.
Starting to feel like Job in the old testament with God testing me all the danged time.
All I want is some happy and healthy goats to raise and enjoy.

I pray everything is working out for you.

Chris

My year has consisted of losing 10 adult alpacas, 1 baby alpaca, 6 baby goats and now this little gal is sick. I have thought of Job going through all of this. I know he went through so much more, but I feel like I understand just an inkling of what he felt now.

I hope you're little one gets better soon!

Jill I just got off the phone with my mom and she said she dosed the kids once a day and a very large dose. She also said that it took for ever for someone of them to get back on their feet. For one we call him OC it took a few weeks with help of braces on his legs. Also Jill she is a cutie.

I am so glad to come across this post, although I hate to hear what's going on. My girls have been doing the same thing for the past month or so, but not to such extremes as you've described. They run, jump and seem perfectly fine, but if for some reason they hit their front knees, it takes them a minute to get themselves up. I chalked it up to the fact that they were still growing and they're in that gangly, leggy stage now. I've never read anything or heard anyone talk about this same thing before. Now I will have to watch them more closely and do a little more research..... always something to learn on the goat forum!

Update Not so Good

I noticed yesterday after I got home from work that she doesn't seem to be pooping. She seems "full", but not bloated (one side bigger than the other). I have been rubbing her belly and she will burp and I hear gurgles in the rumen area so I don't think it has shut down. She seems a bit weaker in the legs also. She can still stand, but falls much easier than she did a couple of days ago. I have been giving her probios once or twice a day. I'm not sure how much I'm allowed to give and also the banamine. How much can I give of that a day? She still seems comfortable..no teeth grinding. But it's obvious her little belly doesn't feel good. Since last night I"ve given her some baking soda which she hates and squeezed some MOM from a gelcap into her mouth. What else can I do?

I think her temp is low...pretty sure she won't make it .

Our vet told us not to use the digital thermometers because they false read too often. So, I bought a brand new "regular" thermometer and it's not working correctly. But, her mouth is cold which I know isn't a good sign

Low temp oft times means dehydration. Were you able to give pure thiamine injections? If not thiamine then Vit B complex is available at TSC and has thiamine in it- it's a lower amount so you have to give a 12 cc or so injection. The VBComplex calms the gut and needs to be given multiple times during the next 36 hours or so. It , like thiamine can not be overdosed as the body flushes what it doesn't need. Sounds like something went wrong ans spun the goat into polio if it's not menengeal worm... thiamine (the best) vit B complex wouldn't hurt and might pull the goat out of it's neurological symptoms. The brain swells and is painful hence the grinding teeth, twisted neck and head, stumbling? crooked mouth? Blindness?, drooling? ... Banamine is good AS LONG AS the goat isn't already low temped- it'll take the temp even lower. You can crush 10 aspirins and mix with water to drench with...it might help. Giving heated to body temp fluids IV sub Q to combat dehydtation. You can pull a goat out of early stage polio but it's got to be a persistent job... I have a doe in my pasture right now that couldn't stand for almost 10 days but we kept her hydrated and she kept eating- we gave thiamine and pennG Procaine ...She went down in Feb. from the dog drinking out of her bucket and she wouldn't drink after the dog and got dehydrated. That doe pulled out of her polio and is fine today- just has a bit of a funny walk at times. She's a packgoat and loves to hike. I have taken a 4 cup pyrex measure bowl and put water, soaked timothy pellets( guinea pig food) that disenigrate, crushed asprins, cc's of vit B complex or thiamin into teh war mix and drenched 30 cc's at a time into our goats with that three or four times a day to rehydrate ( a goat needs nearly a gallon of water a day!!!! Sips of water wont do the trick!!). I'll lay on the ground and hold the goats head up if I have too. It's def a labor of love and a lot of effort...but I've had goats pull through it too! Best wishes Jyllie from a fellow Ohio gal...

Thanks for the info. She wason pure thiamine last week. The vet told us to give it for 5 days. I don't suspect polio...btdt and she doesn't display any of the signs. She is drinking well, but has stopped eating. I've got her bundled up in a blanket right now hoping her temperature will rise. I used the digital on her and it only reads 95. It also read this on our baby alpaca and when the vet got here his "regular" (what are those called anyway) thermometer was 101. That's when he said digitals are not a good idea. I gave her another cc of thiamine this morning and also more probios. I'm not sure if I should try the soaked alfalfa pellets if she has a low temp?

Jill it sounds like your doing everything possible to get her back to feeling well, I'm keeping my fingers crossed & saying some prayers for your little sweetie that she recovers soon! Sending hugs!

Until her temp comes up a bit I'd be afraid to force feed her any kind of food but I'd make sure she has hay, etc. there if she wants it.

I just put a little bit of hay in front of her and she is nibbling at it. This is so weird because her appetite yesterday was great.

FWIW: I mentioned timothy pellets. ) Glad it's not polio then!! I'd sure offer food...food/hay = energy and energy = heat making ability, and keeps that rumen working. You might try hot water ( over body temp..NOT screaming hot) 2 ltr pop bottles in her blanket to help her heat up, and keep switching them out as soon as they drop a bit in temp. A cooled down bottle'd pull heat from her.
Bet wishes....I've so been in that scary place. Keep talking and petting and encouraging her. I've seen a goat fight so hard and survive when it is loved and encouraged. I know that sounds "bunny hugger/cutsey"...and I am not a bunnyhugger...but a goat that is encouraged, just doesn't give up as easily.

I know . I don't have that though, so my next best would be alfalfa pellets. They are so dusty that maybe even the dust from them with water would help. I really do appreciate the advice you're giving me .

Here's the update so far....i am home sick from work so I woke from a much needed nap (nyquil does it to me every time ) and she is still with us. I took her back outside and while she is weak in the legs she was glad to be out there and is even nibbling at the grass. Her temp "seems" higher. At least her mouth is warmer. She took a nice long drink of water (3rd time today). I just can't get her to poop...any suggestions?

SecretCreek, I'm definitely a "bunny hugger", so she's getting lots of tlc and encouragement. I was real close to just putting her in bed with me for my nap, but since I run the a/c in my room I though it best to leave her in the family room watching TV
