This was completely unintentional, but has turned out to be useful. Through the years, when I am about to milk, or when I come out to give my goats treats, or when I have wanted to take them for a walk, I would sing "Hello my baby! Hello my darling! Hello my ragtime gals!" at them. They have come to associate that song with "Mama wants us to come to her for something good!" New goats on the property quickly learn from the veterans, because whenever I sing that song, goats come running...and new goats follow the herd.

You crazy goat lady...LOL....this crazy sheep lady sings:
Baa-ram-ewe! Baa-ram-ewe! To your breed, your fleece, your clan be true! Sheep be true! Baa-ram-ewe!

Can they free range? Would depend on so many factors.....and your ability to be with them with dogs for protection. Think HEIDI and PETER THE GOATHERD.....are you prepared to spend all day roaming with your herd?

Or as said above, without the protection, sure they can....once!

Personally I think you'd get more trouble and goat loss and mad neighbors and possible lawsuits than it would be worth.

Mine do not free-range because of the predators and because if allowed to have a choice, they would choose to eat my garden, landscapnig, and young trees before they headed over to do the same thing at my neighbors house down the road. If I want a certain area cleaned up, I use a temporary hot fence to keep them contained and the predators out. (LGD goes with them)

The only time our goats are allowed to range free, is when there is a human available to be goatherd, and stay right with them. *knock on wood* they have yet to leave the property when they've gotten out of the fencing, but I don't want to know what happens if they did. There's also the tasty garden, roses, flowers, etc., that are just too tempting for them to stay away from. Not to mention the vehicles, tractors, tractor implements, mowers, front porch, back deck, carport, utility trailer, hay shed, etc., that would no doubt be "explored" as only goats can do.

That said, I love to play goatherd and ramble around the property with them, it's relaxing and fun and I see parts of our land I don't normally walk much. I wish I had more time away from the rest of the chores/housework/human kid wrangling for it more often.

CAN they free range? Of course. Do you WANT them to free range, that is the question.

I have no place to free range mine and likely wouldn't anyway. My neighbors like the goats, but they wouldn't care too much if they gobbled up their lilac bushes, rose bushes, trees, etc. I would set up some sort of portable fencing if there was a specific area I wanted them to munch on.

My chickens all come running when we yell "Ladies!" and the goats come running when we holler "Girls!".
