Wormer help...for real this time

I started a thread earlier, but realized I didn't have all the info I need to get correct treatment...and now I do.

I have a doeling that is infested with nematodes. She's 4 months old. I've treated with valbazen and ivomec today. I also treated for cocci just in case. DH just did a fecal on her and found ALOT of nematodes. How would you treat for this? I really don't want to lose her. I lost one monday to what I think was polio, but now I wonder if it was wormload. Should I treat everyone as if they have this too? All other eyelids are nice and pink. Hers was white this morning when I realized something was wrong with her.

Should I let her eat fresh grass or hay only? I think she was still nursing, but I've had her separated from everyone today to give her some TLC.

It might be time to have a Vet look at them rather than treating for things "just in case".

Looking at eyelids mainly applies to Barber Pole Worms, and treating them for things they don't have just adds to the stress.

I hope it's nothing contagious

Sorry for your loss.
Sounded like cocci

The fecal was full of nematodes...just trying to figure out what wormer to use. So I'm not treating them "just in case". I will run a fecal on the rest of them before I treat them.

Then maybe I misunderstood:

I guess in my flustered state I mispoke. I treated her before my DH ran the fecal. We now know what we are dealing with.

Thanks for the support

I realize when we come here asking for help that we open up ourselves for opinions and critics. I am about as low as I can get when it comes to my animal losses and at the age of 48 I don't need knit picking of my posts.

I lost my bottle baby on monday to polio. I lost my 4 day old alpaca cria on monday night to a birth defect. I lost another doeling this afternoon to worms. I lost a buckling tonight to what I believe was worms. He went so quick that we didn't have time to fecal. I am heartbroken, upset with myself that this has happened under my care and just all around sad. I have moved the goats to a new pen to get theirs cleaned up and somehow dried out. All of them will get fecals run and get treated accordingly. What I need to know is this...what do you use for nematodes? I think it's valbazen 1cc per 10lbs.

I am emotionally drained right now and I don't need opinions or critics. If anyone would like to tell me the correct wormer and dosage for nematodes (that is if the rest have them) please email me at jyllie63@roadrunner.com.

I appreciate the sincere condolences, but for now I'm just done.

I'm so sorry, Jillie. To those who like the "kick 'em when they're down" line of thought----- I'm pretty sure that most people would appreciate it if you just kept it to yourself!!! It could be you next with everything going wrong all at the same time.

Donna1982 06/23/11 12:40 AM

Jillie I'm so sorry for all your losses. I wish I had an answer for you.

I am so very sorry for your losses Jill & all what your going through! I know it's such a bummer when you feel like your doing all you can & still loose one!
Here is a link with wormer info, dosages, etc. But I couldn't find nematodes listed, do they also go by another name?

I too am sorry for your loss...you've had a terrible week.
So to save yourself more heartbreak...why dont you call the vet?...ask the vet?

When do people without a vet license and are not vets finally give in and call a certified vet?

Kshobbit 06/23/11 11:02 AM

nematodes aka round worms are easily treated with Safeguard.

Cheribelle 06/24/11 03:52 AM

"Why not call a vet?"

In my own experience, I hear "We don't see goats" Over and Over. I don't even ask them to see the goat, just sell me an antibiotic. NOPE. You guys are my only vet hope, that and my own instincts and experience......

Jill, sure hope you get it figured out, and please, for info-sharing's sake, let us know what works, or doesn't?

Good luck!

rootsandwings 06/24/11 07:39 AM

My vet is competent. But her wormer advice is straight out of vet school - 20 years ago.

I called my recently graduated vet cousin for advice once - know what she said? - "Wow. Sorry, I don't do goats - they die. Good luck though."

mekasmom 06/24/11 08:21 AM

The vet doesn't have to see the goat, just the droppings. They can tell what types of worms FOR SURE, are in there.

Fowler 06/24/11 09:01 AM

Well, I live in Goat world in Texas....Seems everyone around here raises goats. I was lucky to find a Vet that raises sheep...sheep are obviously rare in North Texas. When they have to come out to my place, they bring a whole team of assistants to learn sheep.

hiddensprings 06/24/11 10:04 AM

Oh I am so sorry Jill. I had a similar situation a few years ago. I know it emotionally draining. It is often difficult to find a vet that wants to deal with goats, but try. You are doing the best you can....just remind yourself of that...
