Heartbroken and want everyones thoughts

My wonderful loving Louie died about 30 minutes ago. As all of you know from my other thread he had issues with what the vet said was worms and cocci. Now we have treated with ivomec plus and with cydectin and safe guard (at different times). So whats the deal are the worms become resistant or did we just not catch them in time.

He was perfectly normal until he started tripping over his feet. His eyelids one day were pale but yesterday was pink... I am grasping at straws here to try to figure out what killed my beautiful little boy.

I came home with four and only have two left.. something has to give or before I am out of goats. My heart cant take this.

2doordad 06/22/11 06:19 AM

Sorry to hear about your goat. I wish you well with the others.

Ranger 06/22/11 06:31 AM

Oh, Donna, I'm so sorry. It sounds like he just had too much for his little system to take. You tried everything that you could at the time. Sometimes even our best just doesn't work.

rootsandwings 06/22/11 06:38 AM

This is from reading, not experience, but if they have an extremely heavy worm load, and you kill off all the worms, the worms can let go all at once - leaving holes in the digestive lining, and they bleed out.

yes I have heard that too... thats what causes bottle jaw. He was getting red cell also. I do believe the stress from traveling to Oklahoma then coming down with all this was just to much. It sucks he was such an easy going guy. NOTHING bugged him. I am going to miss him so much.

Thanks for all your warm thoughts. Its been a crappy day and its not even light out.

Alice In TX/MO 06/22/11 06:56 AM

Can you have the vet do a necropsy so you know for sure?

Sorry for your loss.

Jyllie63 06/22/11 08:29 AM

I'm so sorry for your loss :(

Pony 06/22/11 09:40 AM

Oh, darn. I was so pulling for you and your little guy.

I'm just so very sorry for your heartache.

Peace. {hug}

I've heard the vets talk about this in dogs too.

The Tin Mom 06/22/11 10:07 AM

Oh, no! So very sorry! {{{{HUGS}}}}

houndlover 06/22/11 10:54 AM

Get a fecal done on your other goats to see if your wormer is working.

Donna1982 06/22/11 01:47 PM

Hound we did that today. Cocci but they see no worms. See I always thought with cocci they had bad poops... he didn't and either does the others. So the two we have left are on the sustain pills and worming (even though they dont see any). Also both got their cd&T shot. I hope we caught it soon enough in these two.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. I am in shock right now I did not think he would die and surely not as fast as he did.

beccachow 06/22/11 01:51 PM

I am so sorry for your loss :(.

hyamiranda 06/22/11 02:51 PM

I am sorry about your loss, my heart goes out to you. It is never easy to see a loving animal go. Good luck with the other little ones.

bwanaswan 06/22/11 02:54 PM

Sorry for your loss. Been through enough of it lately and hate to see anyone else go through it. Sometimes we do are best and it still doesn't cut it.

I am so sorry for your loss. :(

We just took a fecal for Millie in yesterday and while they didn't see a lot of worms (like only 2 or 3) the vet treated her anyhow because of the FAMANCHA chart. He said that she most likely had worms that were not sexually mature and releasing eggs into her feces yet? I'm still not sure I grasp that but I gave her the dose anyhow since she was looking a bit pale.

Donna1982 06/22/11 04:22 PM

Yeah we are still dosing even though they dont see any worms and then retest in 3 weeks. Also they are getting red cell in their bottles. It sounds heartless of me (because I really do love them all) but like Ive said before he was the reason I have goats. We buried him with his favorite snack and his favorite bottle. For some reason that just made me feel a little bette lol.

houndlover 06/22/11 04:26 PM

I have lost animals to cocci that didn't show ANY symptoms, just got very sick, very quick, and then died. If you have one with high levels of cocci, then EVERYONE should be treated. Wormer won't kill cocci. Also, not every medication works in every climate. Here in the NW I have good luck with Sulmet, poor luck with Corrid. I do not put it in the water, but drench directly, undiluted, with a small drench gun. Look around your property and get rid of anything holding water so mosquitoes can't breed, clean all your troughs and buckets with bleach, and keep in mind that if you have other species (sheep, poultry, rabbits), they could be at risk if you have had an animal with it on the property. Do not kick yourself for not knowing, cocci can be a silent killer.

Donna1982 06/22/11 05:36 PM

Hound went out and bleached everything down... inside bleached the goat blankets the floor bowls everything in the house. Needless to say I smell like bleach but its all clean lol. The only thing we have on the property that holds water is the water dishes. Again thanks everyone for everything you have done for me and my goats.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's been a terrible year here.

Yeah. I agree.

Wags 06/22/11 08:54 PM

So sorry for your loss. I lost a potential herd sire quite suddenly this year. No sign of illness just came out to find him dead. Neither of his siblings got sick, or showed any signs of being ill at all.

nehimama 06/22/11 10:24 PM

I'm truly sorry for your loss. Even worse when you don't know WHY. ((hugs))

Backfourty,MI. 06/23/11 10:59 AM

I am so sorry for your loss! Pulling for your other 2 babies!

Creamers 06/23/11 11:28 AM

I'm wondering - was he on a cocci prevention?

Donna1982 06/23/11 12:04 PM

Well yes and no... I have no idea what he was on before I got him. We only had him for maybe a month. and he was getting corid which is a prevention correct? We were given it as a cure when he had it and he pretty much never went off it because he kept getting it back.

Creamers 06/23/11 12:38 PM

Corid might have been given at too low a dose or maybe the cocci in your area are resistant - Corid works differently than others like Dimethox, so in the future, the dimethox is your best bet, esp. if they already have it and need quick treatment.
I'm sorry you lost him.

Donna1982 06/23/11 01:05 PM

Thanks creamers.. we are using sustain III now so hopefully it will be done with and we can get on a good prevention for it and worms.

mpete 06/24/11 12:28 AM

Corrid can also deplete the vit. b in their system causing polio

where I want to 06/24/11 12:36 AM

I'm so sorry that you lost your boy. Sometimes it is so difficult to help them. I hope the others thrive for you.

Yeah I did know that one.. we thought at first that was his issue.

thanks where.... I still break down a lot.

southerngurl 06/24/11 07:56 AM

How many times was he wormed with each wormer? They can also die of liver failure from too much wormer. Don't go overworming the others out of fear if fecals are clean.

Just an FYI, bleach doesn't work on organic material like dirt wood etc. Best bet is clean and dry.

Sorry you lost him :(

emeraldcowgirl 06/24/11 08:28 AM

I didnt know it didnt work for wood. Thanks for tell me... could you burn the dirt?

He was wormed with cydectin 3 weeks ago and then with started sunday with the iverc plus then stopped because the vet said to use safe guard ... so thats what we are worming everyone left now.
