Can't blame a mama for protecting its baby - or what it *thinks* is its baby! Isn't that what any mother should do?

Interesting story, though! It's a good reminder to be safe rather than sorry during the mating and birthing seasons of wild (or even domestic) animals. Water Moccasins/Cotton Mouths come to mind; they are very aggressive during their mating season.

naturelover, I was going to link to that same video. ugh, it's horrible to watch. We have much smaller deer here and I never EVER thought one could do the slightest damage. If one charges me now, I'll be sure to get out of the way pronto!

That cat bit off more than it could chew, literally. It wasn't just playing with the fawn.
This wasn't a crazed deer, just a doe protecting her fawn.

Suburban deer, like suburban people, have a screw loose. I would bet that cases of attack deer are deer that are used to being fed and not afraid of people any longer. Here, the does run and hope it takes you long long enough to eat the fawn that they can get away.

The only time I have witnessed a deer attacking a person was in a park where people feed them, and a elderly lady had the gall to not give it some food she was eating. She got kicked around pretty bad. Just a taste of what it will be like when welfare runs out for the teeming masses!

Its really a matter of hormones in play. Deer, or any other wild animal, are never "evil" per se. But they are "wild" and as such they have the instinct to protect their young. In my opinion she was in the meadow feeding as usual and probably had her own fawn close by. I live pretty much in the middle of nowhere, so it had nothing to do with deer that are living in urban areas! I just posted this because it might save someone elses children from being hurt or killed!!! Deer fights are vicious, brutal and deadly! Just because a wild animal is graceful, beautiful, and elegant, doesn't mean it can't be deadly. I also found it interesting (after it was all over) that the 3 does surrounded me on all sides, so watch your backs! They seem to have settled down now and are acting normal again. Normal enough that they ate half a row of beans in my garden last night!!! Darn things!

She was in a full out charge at us, less than 30 feet away. She could EASILY EASILY have stomped/ slashed my son! God was watching over us!

I know I would have been frightened too, especially for a youngster. You were fortunate your DH was near!

I cannot help but feel for that deer that was charging you. I have little doubt it thought its baby was there being hurt.
