Maybe thinking about selling my Nubians. . .

I am tempted to sell all or most of my Nubian does and go into Saanens. . .lol. Someone talk me into or out of this!

Some of the best bloodlines to be found at a great deal from a fellow I know - doelings. . . American though, not PB. . . but I can't deal with 3 breeds - I've tried that before.

Nubians, as I've experienced them, as less hardy all around when I compare them to Saanens, and in my area, Saanens are harder to come by, where Nubians are everywhere.

I love my gals dearly, and all are in milk - I couldn't let them go but to the best homes. . . which are hard to come by, so that along would likely disuade me, and plus, I just paid $60 to have a late application put in for LA - which I wouldn't do for these Saanen doelings. . . are they would just be 3 months old. . .

Someone talk me one direction or the other, and if anyone has a good, solid goat background looking for does in milk in WV, Oh or Ky - lol - you can always PM me - haa haa.

Creamers 04/13/11 11:34 PM

LOL! See! HAA HAA - I'm nearly sold!

Also, when they are all white - you can't get swayed by spots and such!

freedomfrom4 04/13/11 11:34 PM

I think it is harder to find a quality saanen then some other breeds. Of course I would like to have a long teated Nubian like yours so yes get out of them and get saanens. I'll take your poor unwanted nubian does :)

southerngurl 04/13/11 11:41 PM

I think you'll get bored with all the blank, regular eared goats after having nubians.

Creamers 04/13/11 11:47 PM

Haaa haaaa~ I might - lol . . . those Nubian ears are pretty amazing. lol - darn unhardy dears!
These Saanens are some amazingly bred gals - Redwood Hills sire - nice, nice girls

Manchamom 04/14/11 04:39 AM

No, it's GOOD to have them all one color-makes it harder to count how many there really are.
Hubby-"why are there 16 goats in the pasture?"
Wife-"What? there's only 12, you must have counted some of them twice.";)

Alice In TX/MO 04/14/11 06:41 AM

We sold our couple of Nubians for the same reason. The doe wouldn't breed every year, she was an airhead, and she stepped on my toes all the time.

I like the white goats. Only have one just now, but all the does that are remaining to kid in May are bred to a Saanen.

rootsandwings 04/14/11 07:22 AM

I've got plenty of milk at the moment, but of couyrse that little buck would be useless to you, so I guess he could come live at my house...

Our Little Farm 04/14/11 07:29 AM

I would go for the more hardy breed in a heartbeat.
On our homestead we are now raising only hardy animals.

GeorgiaGirl 04/14/11 08:17 AM

I had two Saanen does once. I really, really liked them. I didn't want two breeds so I sold them and kept my Nubians. The ears, better tasting milk, and always a surprise in color. Although, I really wouldn't mind having some Saanens again. :) Maybe someday.

Blue Run Farm 04/14/11 09:27 AM

The lady who owns the buck we used this year has some Saanens. I want one! But I would still keep my Alpine girls for color. I like to look out at the field and have a variety :) We had a Nubian, but got rid of her. She was a pain to keep healthy and she reared up and head butted my then five year old son.

Of course, DH will kill me if I buy anymore goats, so the only way I'm getting any Saanen blood here is if it's an Alpine cross. Funny thing though, he always complains about the animals. But when I told him someone was coming to look at the two doelings we have so far and might take one, he said he had been starting to hope we could keep them both. What?!? I just about fell over, lol. He's a softy, he just tries to hide it :)

Cannon_Farms 04/14/11 09:44 AM

I got dibs on the boo boo one, or her sister, mother! just how exactly Im going to get her here might be another story...lol

Cannon_Farms 04/14/11 09:45 AM

FYI, I like the Saanen that I got from Georgia girl, shes a great milker and very easy to work with but as about as bland as a saltless soda cracker when it comes to personality, shell live her life here but I would say I wish I had started with the Nubians first

Kshobbit 04/14/11 09:59 AM

I LOVE Nubians. I love their milk, their colors, their personalities. I raise LaManchas now. I love their milk, color, and sweet dispositions. I find them easier to work with and they are much much quieter(is that a word?).

Rechellef 04/14/11 10:16 AM

Come to the white side of life - LOL. Out of my eight girls, 6 are Saanens (in addition to two LaMacha doelings) and all except one are sweeter than pie. Now keep in mind, they are still goats and will still ditch the sweet nature when it comes to feeding time and run you over just the same :) If I were closer, I might considering trading one Nubian doeling for a Saanen doeling, but KS is a little far from TN.

Oat Bucket Farm 04/14/11 01:37 PM

I am no help talking you out of it. I sold off all of my Nubians too. Only I sold mine in favor of LaManchas. But Saanens are beautiful too :)

tmnigerians 04/14/11 02:49 PM

I'll take some nubians!! We love them, the ears, colors, personalities!!!

I'd trust you with them, too! haa haa - that is my main fear - - - I must be sure if I sell, the quality of the home is as good as it is here. You need all 3 of those ones! lol

Cannon_Farms 04/14/11 06:27 PM

think we could fex ex them? I wish i was in a position to afford all three of them Id do it in a heart beat. Anyone want some top quality Nigerians? Love the Nigerians but honestly Nubians are evil little heart steelers.

LOL. While I have no opinion on the original question - I do have to file this one away as it could be very useful in the future...

Sherrynboo 04/14/11 09:09 PM

I just got my first Saanan a couple of months ago. She is quite a character and she may be leaving in the fall. I have a toggenberg that I dearly love but she has a lopsided udder and I wanted a goat with both sides working. This Saanan just drives me nuts! First off, she is a bellower.......she doesn't just bawl....she bellows...........incessantly at times! She was quiet for about two days after kidding but soon was back to the bellowing. Meanwhile my sweet togg is just lying around watching the world go by. The baby saanan is a sweetheart and I will be keeping her for sure. My advice...........make sure you get some quiet ones or you will regret it:))

Payment plan or a Nigi trade? Haa haa! Seriously - I'd consider trades to Nigis - hardy little suckers! Not sure how far you are - I'm about Savannah. lol. I think one huge key to Nubian health is a wamer climate. . . haa haa - I have some local folks interested, but I love these girls and can't even let them go to an questionable situations

sad to say, one of the things I'd miss about Nubians is the bellowing - lol

Lada 04/15/11 08:46 AM

If you are getting rid of your milkers, I want one. Seriously. I'm only a little over an hour from Ashland, and I've been looking for another milking Nubian. I am not fan of obnoxious goats, but the people who drink our milk prefer only Nubian milk.

southerngurl 04/15/11 09:34 AM

My nubians are quiet. Well except for this one bottle baby...

I considered selling my Alpines and going to Saanens only, but we aren't ready to give up the sassy attitudes yet ;)

copperpennykids 04/15/11 02:39 PM

S-A-A-N-E-N-S!

Saanens are awesome - surprised to hear someone has a big mouth Saanen - the most ours do is a gentle mmmaa? Generally only right before they kid and for a few days afterward.

If you get well-bred Saanens you can get goats that have 4% and higher butterfat which makes for very tasty milk. Redwood Hills/Companeros (for Saanens) have some lovely lovely Saanens. Should make it easier to sell kids with their name in your bloodlines too.

BTW: Saanen breeders are not "picky" about American vs. Purebred the way that Nubian breeders are. Those who breed Purebreds want to breed Purebreds, but they don't look down on the Americans and the Americans don't look down on the Purebreds. Mostly we just want to breed the best goat we can. :) And Saanen breeders are rarely about the "drama". ;)

All white does make it simpler to just breed for excellent conformation and gorgeous productive udders. Did I mention that I think that Saanens are awesome and you will be so glad you switched? LOL

beccachow 04/15/11 02:42 PM

What's the big idea, psoting cute pictures in the middle of a normal, every day thread? that was sneaky, and when I find Calliann I will...*thud.

Cannon_Farms 04/15/11 06:04 PM

500 miles give or take a couple from the google maps. Id consider it as well :) I love the little guys and they are easy for me to work with, however considering the issues we are having my husband has to be able to fill in on milking, he cant do the NDs as well, and giving the fact hes a big guy they are harder for him period. They where bought for milk and show toys but the showing isnt going to be happing with us having two kids under 2 now lol...
I have one heavy experienced milker the rest have nice udders but have never been hand milked. All are out of the best stock around. Email me if you want to really want to talk about it, Im coming up to TN somewhere to help a friend haul horses twards the end of the month so this can be feasible. kabukienot@yahoo.com

KnowOneSpecial 04/15/11 06:31 PM

Too bad you're not by me as the little guy in the picture will be for sale. Mom and Dad are on our farm and as sweet as can be! I also have his smaller twin brother for sale, too!

Blue Run Farm 04/15/11 06:57 PM

I want a Saanen! No fair, I want one, I want one!!! Okay, whine over. It's just that hubby won't let me buy anymore goats and I think Saanens are adorable. Sigh...

chamoisee 04/15/11 08:49 PM

Saanens vs Nubians??? How can there be any question? Saanens are calm, quiet, laid back animals, very nice to have! Nubians.....hmmm.

You can tell that I am not very objective about this question! ;-)

RedSonja 04/16/11 05:43 PM

If you sell any milkers let me know. Not trying to sway you to do either thing ;) but with two of my does not being bred yet, I'm going to need more milk.
