I noticed this last year. I was milking goats for the first time with 2 FFs. They kidded about a month apart. When I started drinking the first ones milk after 2 week, it had a strong after taste. I thought this was normal. A few weeks later, that aftertaste disappeared. The next goats kidded and the same exact thing happened with her milk. I have no idea what causes it but I don't think it has anything to do with colostrum or diet. It's like something else just has to clear out of there.

LOL, goto10, That's what I was thinking. This went on for two weeks in the firs doe that kidded. It is slowly going away now. Thank goodness because there was NO WAY anyone could have drank that stuff. Well, except for my DH, I made him drink it but I masked the flavor with some maple sirup I recently made myself. Hehehe I call it START milk, the colostrum.

Off-flavor appears to be caused by a lot of things. It could be a bird she saw yesterday, the colostrum (9 days lactation, could still have colostrum), molasses, management, mastitis, etc. In my experiences, off-flavor is caused most often by improper chilling methods. Tossing it in the fridge doesn't cut it. The milk should be placed in icewater containers in the fridge or freezer. (setting the milk by itself in the freezer can work, but not as well as the icewater method) Molasses can sometimes cause off-flavor, but it varies. This year we are using a molasses mineral with no problems.
Or it can just be the goat. Some of our goats have off-tasting milk, though they are on the same feeding program as the rest of the goats with perfect tasting milk.
So, try as much as you can before drawing conclusions on the cause of off-flavor. It will pay off. I have converted long-time goat milk haters to full goat herd owners with a simple taste of well-cared for goat milk. Take time, observe, experiment, and you shouldn't have any problems.
