Sick goat big belly overnight!
She is pregnant but by only a month. Yesterday she was slim. Today her belly is huge. The whole thing not just one side. What can i do? Treat for bloat? She obviously doesn't feel good. Ears are turned back and just wants me to pet her. Help!
What has she been eating? Pat her side and see how tight she sounds compared to the other goats.
It sounds like bloat if it came on suddenly. |
Both of her sides are tight. Yesterday someone forgot to close the stall and all my goats got out into the other area of the barn. My big trash can of feed was opened. I can't imagine her being able to get in that though. I do have a couple of electrical plugs that were chewed completely off of a extension wire I had hanging on the wall. Do you think if she did eat the plugs I should treat her for bloat? I'm hoping no one actually ate the plugs and they were dragged away somewhere along with a couple of leads I found. Ugh! So frustrating.

She's a nigerian.
Give her half a cup of vegetable oil.
If it's bloat , that shoul dfix it |
I've seen my 200+ lb boer crawl underneath my little Ford Ranger for a few kernels of corn. Never underestimate what they will do for food.
So I gave her between 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup of vegetable oil. Then took her for a 3/4 mile walk. She just stares into space if I don't lead her around. And she just want to lay down. Is their a shot of something I can give her? Hopefully something available at TSC since that's the only thing around here. And she is preggo by about a month.

you might want to call your vet and bring her in. was it pelleted food or grain? pellets get compacted very fast and will not move. this will lead to her death very fast. wanted to add there are two types of bloat frothy bloat that you can try and treat with oil, and bloat from rumen compaction. no oil will help later case and need surgical intervention if the animal is to be saved. |
how much feed was missing after the goats got out?
Quite a bit. I'd say 10-15 pounds maybe. I have 7 goats. 4 nigerian and 3 alpine. The alpines I can see getting into the grain because it is in a 50 gallon trash can. And the can was still up right. She is a nubian and pretty laid back. I just can't see her jumping into the can to get some.
It was grain and not pelleted feed. I went outside and got her up and moving again. Rubbed her belly good also. Someone told me to give her some 7-up to get her to burp also. Hmm..ever hear of this?
offer her some baking soda it will help her bloat also. if she doesnt readily take it herself you can mix 1/2 cup in a cup of water and syringe it down her.
will try the baking soda thanks.
Hoping TSC has cd antitoxin also. |
CD Antitoxin and therabloat. TSC should have both of them. I do lots of rumen massaging and belly lifts on bloated animals.
Baking Soda, CD Antitoxin. Take her temperature also. If it is below normal the rumen may be shutting down. Probios can not hurt in this case. I hope your goat feels better soon.
I would relieve some of the pressure with a tube. Probiotics, baking soda, oil can be given. If she ate too much grain then she may be in acidosis and die no matter what you do.
how is your doe this morning?
She was actually up and moving a little bit. Her stomach is still big but she seems to feel a little bit better. Going out in a few to check on her again.
Is she back to normal again? I would not give her any grain till she's feeling better but if you do only give her a small amount. I'd just give her good hay, probios paste & more baking soda if she needs it.
What did you end up getting or giving to her so far? |
I gave her 3/4 cup veg oil. Half a can of Sprite ( before I was told about the baking soda) Last night I gave her some baking soda. She's been nibbling on hay. And acting pretty normal now. Heading up to TSC this morning hope they have some probios paste. Thanks everyone for their advice. I really appreciate it :)
