If the house wouldn't have been in such great shape, we probably would have turned the barn into the house. We've always talked about living in the bottom of a bank barn and having the enitre upper part as a rec area. We DID turn the upper part into our rec area (sort of). We have all of our weight-lifting equipment up there, a half-court basketball court, and a tv and vcr so that I can do my mini-trampoline exercises. We also store our ancient pop-up camper up there and we leave it set up so that we can camp out there whenever we want to.
There is a grain room up there, so we've discussed putting a railing around the upper part of it, building some steps over the steps that go to the lower level, and making a sleeping loft. Our friends did just that...they have a ladder, a railing around the area, and two twin beds with a little dresser and table lamp. It's just darling! Whenever they have get togethers in the barn (which is quite often), all of the little girls like to go up there and play.
If we ever re-floor the south side of the upper level, we'll probably set up our ping pong on that side (it's just sitting there unused because we don't have anywhere to set it up). Right now, that side is too dangerous to even walk on.

And this helps alleviate my jealousy how?!?!
Just kidding of course. We are making an offer on our dream property down here in N. GA. Almost 4 acres with a SMALL barn (24x20 I think) and a double wide mobile home. But it's only $29,000! And 25 minutes from church less to store. We currently live in a subdivision with almost 1 acre. We already have 2 ND's and a small flock of chickens. Our current "barn" is 8'x16'. I almost fell over when I saw you barn!

Oh, how fun that you're in the process of getting your property! I have always loved the search.
Good luck getting the place. I'm sure your critters will be happy with their new home.

In your second post that has pictures, in the first picture of that post, and to the left....that (now lower than the rest) partition leads out to the rest of the barn, correct?
One thing I can promise you is that if you leave that corner alone, and do not raise it, your ND's will leap from that manger, on top of that partition, dance a jig up there just to freak you out, and then gaily jump down to the other side to frolic in the rest of the barn and see what kind of trouble they can get into.
And yes, they WILL dance a jig on that bare 2 inches of board showing, easily. My minis will dance jigs on top of ONE inch thick pieces of wood, just to watch my eyes pop out of my head and to hear me yell at them to be careful! 1/2 inch edges are no challenge for my ND's.
Other than that, it looks like a lovely set up.
And *I* don't have barn envy.....but that is only because I am currently in the process of gathering a bunch of locally grown materials for my Japanese-inspire, BAMBOO barn. ~nodsnodsnodsnodsnods~

YES, you are exactly right. It is my plan to either remove the manger in that section, or to build a solid wall a few feet higher on the left. I want NO escapees!
Care to share any pictures of what you have in mind for your barn? I'm very intrigued.

Oh that is totally awesome!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE old barns!! I wish I had one. My inlaws have an old barn like that, but they're slowly letting theirs fall apart and what I wouldn't give to have it. I'm so glad you're keeping yours up.

Well, hubby and I used to always judge people when we were driving around the countryside and say they were dumb for letting their barns fall apart. So, when we moved here, we thought we just HAD to keep ours up, or we'd have to lump ourselves in with the "dumb" people! I must say, though, I don't really think it is so much that people are dumb, but that it is quite an expensive undertaking!

I don't think their dumb, but it used to be a beautiful barn and instead of putting a roof on it to keep it from falling apart, they just built a new barn. The new barn will never have the character that the old barn did. They even had a historical society come and offer to totally re -do the barn for it's historical significance, but they turned it down.

This would be the inspiration:
A traditional Japanese Minka, or farmhouse, made of (mostly) bamboo. Now, MY plan is to use even MORE bamboo. So, the roof I will use:
Now, because my barn will not be elevated, like the minka in the picture, (it IS a barn, after all) it will be built upon a foundation of Texas Cedar beams (available from around my pond and along my fence-line), with cedar-slat floors (available from the same place).
The bamboo is being provided from wonderful folks around the state who have nice groves that need to be manicured. I.E., sweat equity.
Once it is done, I will take five minutes to feel the equal of those with century-old barns that LONG AGO paid for their carbon foot-print, and the superior of those who put up new wood barns, or metal barns, because my lovely bamboo will last as long or longer (all that silica in it) and will replace itself in less than five years.
I will only get to enjoy this sensation for that five minutes, though, because then the goats will bleat at me, demanding the attention of their serf to provide scratches, treats, and dinner. :sigh:
