You are doing fine. it is amazing what a little colostrum and some warmth does for these little guys. And I must say that he is the cutest little Boer baby I have seen in a long time. Sure hope he makes it!

If he is drinking from a bottle just fine there is no need to tube him. He is probably crying due to being alone. Also kids are all day drinkers a bit here and a bit there so it takes sometime for them to get use to a few bottle feedings a day. If he drinks 3 oz then do not worry about feeding him again in an hour he can wait longer.
Just the colostrum, I would not give anything else sugary etc.

He is a cutie

He is precious! Keep up the great work, he is lucky to have you! Now you might have to change your name to "Mommy to 6"!

What a cutie. I've had kids from multiple births that had trouble standing and just looked odd for a while. I think it's from the crowding and being tired. Good luck with him!

He's taking 3cc, not 3 oz, right? Then I would give him as much as he wants, whenever he asks, LOL!!! What an adorable little coat! Did you whip that up for him right at the moment or is it a little dog coat?? So perfect! Do wipe his rear for him with a warm, wet cloth, like momma would lick his rump to stimulate poos & pees.....

Make sure you milk out mama fully several times a day so you are not dealing with mastitis or a dry doe later

To tube without the actual tube feeder, you can just make one up using a very thin tube (you SHOULD be able to get some from a fish tank supply store, Lowes, etc... just try and get soft textured but fairly 'firm' tubing so that it doesn't collapse). Then get a BIG syringe, and attach the tubing to the luer-slip end (luer lock may not work well).

I've had to tube a few kids.

Have you tried doing a bottle with him? Even if weak, they can often latch on fairly well to a bottle that's held still for them.

I'm so happy he's doing well for you. Looks like you're doing everything right. The heat, along with the colostrum was crucially important. Good Job. He's really a cutie.

And. . . I need to, must know more about his little coat! Where did you get it? Did you make it? It looks like a GREAT little coat!

He is definately a little doll baby! I've always loved the boer goats but I just want them for pets & then dh will want to breed them so they have babies, then he'll think we should butcher some & I don't want to eat them so no Boers here, at least not yet!

Arrow Update....

Hi again everyone!

I wanted to give you all a quick update on our little guy and his mama. We had a LONG night last night, feeding a few CCs every hour, but around 3:00 am, his sucking instinct kicked-in and he took 12 cc from the syringe. At
4:30 am, he took about an ounce and then slept for 3 1/2 hours. He was looking so good that we returned him to his mama to see if they could make things work. Unfortunately, "mama" is not looking too well. From what I can tell, she has not passed her placenta yet, and she had a terrible odor coming from her. I immediately called the vet...requesting someone other than the doc that came yesterday. She told me what to do, (meds. etc.) but said that in cows and goats the placenta can take a week to pass and that as long as the mama is eating and drinking, just to keep an eye on her. She gave me danger signs to watch for, too. But really stressed the eating and drinking. She told me to go ahead and just bottle feed the baby because "mama" is just not gonna be able to do it. So, he spent today in the barn, and is now back in the house for the night. He's drinking from his bottle like a champ, and is starting to get on a good schedule. He's giving my 10 year old daughter a real taste of motherhood!!! Now...if only Mama could start looking better!

ooops..just noticed some of your posts!

Hi again!

I just noticed some of your posts with questions....

I bought the little coats about 4 years ago when we had our first babies. They came from Hoegger Supply. In a recent catalog they're $12.95 each. I LOVE them. They're made really well, and they're soft and warm. They would be really simple to sew though so I'll probably make my own if I ever need to get more. But, then again...it's nice to just pick up the phone and place the order.

Goat Servant: About her bottom...her vulva didn't get longer, and start to open up like my other doe's did when she was close to delivering. In fact, it looked like it was getting tighter. I kept looking at it thinking, "something isn't right. There's no way she's gonna be able to deliver these babies." When I called the vet, I told them it was almost as if there wasn't any opening at all! Now...the day she was actually pushing, it was more "puffy" but there still wasn't any noticable dialation. Over the phone one of the vets I spoke to said that was an indication that it wasn't a head coming first. But, from the photos I've seen of "improper" birthing positions, there's something showing in the vulva. Her's was shut tight!!! It just wasn't right!! I took pictures of it and posted them last week if you wanna see what I'm talking about. Needless to say...she won't be bred again.
