dripping urine thru umbilical cord?

Has anyone ever seen such a thing in a newborn doeling???

mekasmom 01/15/11 06:46 AM

Not urine.
Are you sure it isn't simply serum? or amniotic fluid? I would tie it off if I were you.

Natural Beauty Farm 01/15/11 06:57 AM

Are you sure its doeling?
If so just tie off.

Ark 01/15/11 07:11 AM

It's definitely a doeling. LOL
I wouldnt want to tie the wrong thing off!! :bash:

It looks and smells like urine. I caught some in a cup to be sure because at first I thought it was clear colored. But, no, it's yellowish and smells like baby goat pee!

Without intervention, this little doeling probably would have died by evening.
She was weak at birth, although she did FINALLY manage to stand up and nurse weakly. She seemed to be getting weaker and weaker, so I brought her in to give her colostrum with a bottle. She wouldnt suck at all so I just dripped a couple ounces down her throat. She swallowed it just fine, with no coughing.

But soon she was so weak she couldnt hold her head up.

First I gave her nutridrench, which she hated, but then she went back to sleep.
Then I gave her baking soda which seemed to perk her up for about 15 minutes. She held her head up all that time too.
Then after talking to the vet, hubby stopped by his office to pick up "multi-min" which has selenium in it. By the time DH got home she was still pretty weak, but not QUITE as bad. I gave her the shot of multimin and there was a huge improvement.
And hour or so later she willing SUCKED down a 2 ounce bottle of colostrum!
So, here I was getting my hopes up that maybe she'll make it and be just fine... when I notice there is urine dripping out of her umbilical cord.....
sigh.:stars:

KimM 01/15/11 08:48 AM

I had a Boer cross doeling that did that. It eventually closed on its own but I would think there's a risk of bladder infection and I kept applying iodine to the cord stump once a day, every day.

jill.costello 01/15/11 10:46 AM

Have you seen her ALSO urinate from her vagina?

Ark 01/15/11 11:25 AM

No, havent seen her urinate normally.

julieq 01/15/11 11:37 AM

This isn't something I've seen either, so it'll be interesting to see what other breeders have to say.

Natural Beauty Farm 01/15/11 11:47 AM

Its totally normal. In womb all waste is sent back to mama through cord. By tying it off her body takes over and she will start to pee normally. Goats sometimes bit the cord of kids and that seals it, we humans dip and tie.

Cheribelle 01/16/11 02:53 AM

That makes sense. Never would have thought of it.

Ark 01/16/11 05:46 AM

oh my goodness! She FINALLY peed normally this morning - it's 4:30 and she just ate 4 whole ounces, and then peed. Whew. I am so relieved.
thank you again!
I dont NORMALLY tie off cords... and there normally isnt a problem with that! The one or two times I have done it was because of bleeding, not peeing.
She's up, on her feet, and SO CUTE.
Maybe I can get a pic on here.
She's smells AWFUL though. I've never given a goat kid a total bath, but I am tempted with this one. GAG.

Alice In TX/MO 01/16/11 06:40 AM

Warm water. Blow dryer. You can do it!:nanner:

Backfourty,MI. 01/16/11 07:41 AM

Thank Goodness it sounds like she's going to make it & everything is working normally now!
Glad NBF clarified the urine through the ambilical cord, I would have never thought of that either but it sure sounds logical.

Pony 01/16/11 09:04 AM

You've certainly started your kidding season in an interesting way.

Glad your doeling is doing well, and that you shared the umbilicus/urine connection. I would never have come up with that.

I always tie off (sha - as if I'm some big experienced breeder or something, with 2 whole kiddings under my belt...)

Again, congrats on things going well after the glitches. :)

Ark 01/16/11 09:19 AM

Thanks everybody!!

Allright Alice... you've convinced me! I'll try it.

And Pony, I've had all the excitement I can handle. The rest of the kidding season had better be dull and boring!

2 more first fresheners to go this month, then a couple more months before the 2 semi-permanent-boarder-goats kid. They arent mine, but they live here. For now. LOL

BackFourty, I'm with you - never heard of such a thing, but it does make sense.

that's strange because I clicked on it and it worked for me. It may be that since it's on my daughter's FB page, she has it restricted where it's not viewable by "everyone." I will ask her. Sorry about that!

Cyngbaeld 01/19/11 10:23 PM

It wasn't anything you did that caused it. This happens occasionally in humans too as well as any animal that has an umbilical cord. There is a ligament that attaches the bladder to the wall of the abdomen and it is right at the umbilicus. Sometimes there is a fistula that forms in utero and it will leak urine. It normally closes off on its own. If it doesn't, and it is a persistent leak, the vet can close it with a suture.
