I just today banded my first baby buck. He is 14 days old and didn't seem to notice. I had a little trouble getting both of them in the band but not too difficult. I plan to keep him as a pet and lawn mower.

I usually band at 2-3 weeks of age. I'll be waiting on doing it to my current 2 bucklings due to the weather. We are looking at -25 nights this weekend and I don't want to over stress the boys who are being raised on their dam. You can get the equipment through Hoeggers.

Yeah, with a "crusher" you don't know if castration is total, until possibly it is too late and the buckling gets it's mother/sisters or other female goats pregnant. They say banding is cruel, but no wether I have ever seen that had been banded acted uncomfortable. I know there must be cases of where it gets infected and the animal dies, but I'm sure this mostly happends to the irresponsible or the untaught.

burdizzo only

I've castrated rabitts to horses since I was 12 and prefer the burdizzo by far.Never had infection with it, a couple problems with banding and cutting though.
You can hear the cord snap and you can feel the cord has separated.
Like anything you need to learn how to use them.
I did use the bander for the neighbors dog because I knew I would only get one chance before getting bit. Before anyone gets started.I've warned the guy for years about his dogs packing up and killing my livestock.I shot four of his dogs and he still won't learn.I was hoping the dog neutered would stay home.At least he dosen't run with a pack. But he still sneaks up each morning and I lose cats and an occasional chicken.
I'd rather shoot the owner
Sorry I drifted off a mite.

Chas - banding dog?

Chas: How old was the dog that you banded? I didn't know it could be done. I think we're going to be bringing our dog to the vet to be neutered, but just curious!

I like to band before a month old but have waited a few times till they were 3 months. No difference except it took longer for the testicles to drop off on the 3 month olds which means the risk of infection was there for longer... The biggest thing is to be sure you have both testicles in the scrotum and below the band before you let go....

i banded my boys all three at five months of age.. b/c it helps.. if you are not selling them at a young age.. it helps with UC.. the longer you wait the better their urthea will develop and the less chance they have of getting uc stones with a lil grain...

Off the subject, I guess, but I agree with okgoatgal2. On an older buckling, 3-4 months old, those berries are not-so-small and it takes a while for them to fall off when banded. Cutting is quicker and easier at that age. Like she says, 15 seconds and a little antibiotic and vit injection and he's good to go. The area is left open to drain and heal and there is almost no blood- and no rotting stinky flesh hanging off him.

I do my nigerians around seven weeks. I've talked to a lot of experts and for every one who claims the waiting for the urethra to grow will offset UC, there is another who says there is actually no hard evidence to show later banding is any less a preventative. From what I can gather, UC is more a a cause of diet than anything.
Having said that, I still err on the side of caution and band later. Most of my boys are uncomfortable for a couple hours so I do the procedure in the evening so they can go right to sleep. This has worked very well. Some keepers give a baby aspirin too. I would like to try the burdizzo though if I could see it done first and totally reliable.
Oh - never use regular rubberbands!!
