Lots and lots of ((hugs)) to you. This but tears in my eyes. I have an Aussie that I won't trust for a second with my goats, but a boxer and a Lab that don't even see them. Yet I still worry. You are in my thoughts.

Several years ago I had the same issue, much beloved dogs, found excuses, always "some" doubt. The it hit me straight on, 2 of my dogs killed one goat and were after another when I caught them. I had them put down, VERY hard. At least you had another option there, but I know ow hard it is.

So sorry to hear that. We have a dog named Bella that attacked one of our goats a month ago. A single bite, but that was enough for us to know she needed to go. I don't want her killed, but so far we are still trying to find a rescue or no kill shelter that has room to take her.

She had gotten her head through the fence and I assume got stuck. She was my only goat with horns. And the dog got her. It was a terrible sight. I don't think I have ever had to "take care" of anything that terrible before. I was in a bit of shock so just kinda became a machine until all was settled.
I could have written the exact same story - word for word - back in the spring. A sweet little Pygmy doe, one of the few we had with horns, did the same thing and are loving Aussies tore her to bits. . .but not quite.
They went to an Aussie rescue to non-livestock homes, and are going well.
I've never quite gotten over that event and was glad my husband could handle it.

All goats get disbudded, but only 100% goat safe dogs are here now.

I'm SO sorry this happened - I know how sad it is

We are west of Hutchinson by about an hour. I think I fixed it so people can add me easier. I think I sent you an invite... let me know if I didn't because that means I sent the invite to the wrong person.

I am so sorry. It is possible that your goat started screaming or protesting when her head got stuck and triggered prey drive in the dog.

Glad you got things taken care of.

I got the invited and added you.

I used to live in Kansas. Grew up in a little town in the Southeast corner, Humboldt.

I was home.... I didn't hear anything. It happened in a space of about 2 hours. And as much as I hate to think about this now.... she attacked this same goat before. It was the strangest thing. 5 of the 7 goats were in the dog pen when we got home. I only saw 4 of them because one was hiding under a set of steps that we have out there. One of the dogs was "guarding" the steps. We were walking back towards the house we saw her. She had bites everywhere and the dog was still trying to get at her. *sigh* I should have gotten rid of her then. But it was the 1 goat, the one with horns so I thought maybe she had butted her or something. That was also my birthday.

We are just paying very close attention to the dogs we have from now on. My other one seems to be doing fine. He was in the pen with her but she was "guarding" the goat when I looked out so pretty sure he didn't get close since they weren't fighting... Plus we checked "output" to make sure there were no signs. She had signs, lots of signs, he had none. He grew up with the goats. They are family. We don't have the heart to tell him he isn't a goat.

Sorry for your loss! There seems to be something about hearing a goat shriek that drives other animals to distraction. We lost one to our cows, it got it's head stuck in the fence and they just beat it to death. I had no idea that could happen. Needless to say they were kept seperate after that. Glad you were able to find a place to take your dog in!
