Anyone with Ammonium Chloride near Tallahassee?
I have a sick wether, my 1st, and need AC. Anyone have some? Know where I can get it? Have an alternative?
He is 5 months old and I have been giving him vinegar and gave him 1cc of banamine. |
lime juice is what is recommended for people with kidney stones, I have some but...
is there a compounding pharmacy around you? |
No compounding pharmacy. The local pharmacy said that they could order it.
You are a LONG way from Tallahassee but thanks for the offer. Lime juice couldn't hurt - right? |
I order mine from Hoeggers but I don't know if they can over night express it or not. Have you checked with any mom & pop pharmacies? They would most likely have it before a Rite aid I would think.
I'm going to town tomarrow & can overnight exspress some of mine to you if you want it, just send me a PM with your address. I'll check my messages before I leave or call my Phone #989-873-6905 Also get him to a vet if you can't do it yourself, it will take 2 people & have his pizzle cut Off, very important! Most likely that's where the stones are & blocking him up! He'll need antibiotics for a weeks after that procedure too! If you need me to ship it, call in the a.m. I'm going to bed soon. |
Thank you Katie. I will send you a pm with my address and a fedex #. I would really appreciate that.
|
The vitamin shoppe web site shows buffered ammonium chloride - would that work?
|
I don't know if that's the same as Ammonium chloride or not that we use for the goats. I wonder if you ask at your feed store if they would know.
My feed store use to carry the AC but they only could get it in 50 pound bags & didn't sell alot of it so now they don't carry it any more. When I needed it the 1st time of course in an emergency my vet called around & found some for me while I was there with my buck to have the pizzle cut off. |
Thanks for talking with me Katie - it made me feel better about my boy. I will call you in the morning when I find stuff out. Pm me your address and I will send you some soaps!
|
I've been wanting get some DL Methionine for my emergency kit. Even though I have AC it sounds pretty good. It can possibly be obtained at a well stocked health food store. Here is a thread about it. http://www.homesteadingtoday.com/sho...ght=methionine
|
Hey, Mana pro m minerals has AC in it, and so dose noble goat, and all but dumor sweet goat feed, just as something is better than nothing.
If you can get the buffered I would up the dose. If the stone is already there I doubt anything is going to make it go away. |
try to contact Paul from here, lamancha paul, he should have some and shouldnt be that far I think, maybe Im off my map this morning, but a couple hours???

Good luck! |
Good Morning All! I do not think I have enough coffee in me to get it together yet this A.M. but --What the heck is a pizzle? Sounds like some important part I should know about!
|
The pizzle is the thread-like skin at the end of the penis that twirls around when they urinate so that a buck can spray himself. It's very thin and can easily get blocked by tiny, sand-like stones of calculi.
He will need to be sat down on his rear and the sheath pulled back to expose the penis. Once at a boer goat show there was a young buck very sick with blockage. We exposed him and the pizzle which is usually thin and flimsy, was hard, white and almost horn-like. They snipped it off and urine came flying out but he was too full of toxins by then. My friend had a little buck that was blocked and in a pinch she bottle fed him water with apple cider vinegar in it. Can you drench him with ACV water until you get AC? Quote:
|
Took him to the vet and had his pizzle taken off. By the time we left he had left a little puddle and the vet was happy.
I keep drenching him with ACV. Found DL Methionine in "Grass Green" at petsmart. I looked at the labels and choose the one with 11% but when I got home I realized that it was LIVER flavored - he did not like it - lol. Also picked up vit C. He is on bactrim for the next 5 days - for cocci and pizzle problems. Banamine in the morning, Ace at night. I will have AC by the morning. I hope he pulls through - He is such a sweet boy. |
Man-o-man...I sure hope he is ok!! I'm so sorry you had to go through this...Hopefully those who read this thread and don't have AC will order some NOW! It's one of those things that when you need it, you need it now and it's hard to find. I order mine from Hoeggers. http://www.hoeggergoatsupply.com/xca...5&cat=7&page=1
good luck to you and your boy. keep us posted and I'll be sending some healing vibes! |
Wow minelson - you topped the 11K mark!

Awwww, that is really sweet of you but you really don't need to send me soaps. I was just concerned for your sweet boy & have been in the same situation before & I know how you feel. I'm just glad I could help. Don't forget to keep drenching him for about 2 weeks to clear out any crystals or stones still in his body & try & find food with AC already in it will help too. His calcium to phosphorus ratio is just way off for the little guy! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for him. Keep us updated please. |

I am going to check out Petsmart and get some of the Dl Methionine concoction. That's good to know.
|
They have L Methionine at the Vitamin Shoppe. You can also order AC from them in tablet form but they do not have it in the shop here :(
I have not seen almond dripping tonight, I am so worried about him. He sure did not like the liver flavor. . .wish I could do more for him. . . |
The AC will be there in the a.m., give him 2 tsp as soon as it comes. I sure hope he hangs in there. Is he still eating & drinking some? Did you get him off of his momma & no grain yet?
I'll be worried about the little guy all night too! |
I just thought of something else, When you give him the ace tonight if you happen to see him straining to try & pee or is dripping a little you can massage him around the sheath area on his belly. It might help to dislodge any stones or crystals & help him pass them a little easier. Now that the pizzle is cut off at least the hole will be a little bigger.
I'm just trying to think of what ever I can now that may help to get him through the night. |
He is in his own stall tonight, by himself, with just grass hay and water. I have been massaging his belly all day with warm compresses. He was miserable this afternoon. Hopefully the sun coming up will bring a better day.
|
I'll be thinking of you both Cathy! Keeping you in my thoughts & fingers crossed! He's going to make it, I know he will!!

He is still up this morning but I see no dripping - gave him banamine and a hot massage. I gave him a shot of B complex last night so at least I can see if it shows in his urine. After the AC gets here I am going to give him ace, which will make him take a nap, hopefully, and then I can get some really warm water compresses on him.
|
I hope the AC get's there soon. He's a little fighter. Keep thinkink positive thoughts!
|
Fedex JUST got here!! Big wreck on the highway - she was very nice about it - even helped me get the stuff into Almond. I did see a drip this morning after the banamine.
From what I have read he has been to high in phospherous, not enough calcium. Not sure about that since he has peanut hay, alfalfa pellets and has been nursing. He has been getting meat goat pellets with the coccidia medication in it. I had taken him off everything but grass hay but I do not want him to get depressed. What should I give him to get him past this and prevent it in the future? |
Everyone has there own way that they think is best to feed wethers, it's getting it right for your boys that is the hardest part. You have bucks & have had male goats all along with no problems so far so alot of it has to be his system also.
The calcium to phosphorus ratio needs to be 2:1. I think it was Vicki McGaugh that told me 5:1 is what she feeds her boys, that was when I had a buck with UC. It sounds like to me that he was getting more calcium than the phosphorus to balance it out. Alfafa pellets & his mothers milk are both very high in calcium. I believe it's the calcium that causes the stones but can't remember for sure. I would try to find him the feed that has the AC already in it, Hay & browse. He will still need to be drenched with AC for about 2 weeks to make sure you get all the stones & crystals dissolved in his system. I feed my boy's Goat Power by ADM Alliance, it has AC in it, they get a grass/alfafa mix hay & browse. I've never had a buck or wether with UC since or before the one buck, that was over a year ago. It took me awile to figure out what worked for me here. It may take a little time for you too but I definately would get him off his momma. Do you have a probios on hand? I was just thinking it may be good for his tummy while on the antibiotics? Hopefully he'll start peeing alittle better hopefully tonight or in the a.m. now that he has the AC & the banamine or Ace to help relax him. Your doing a Great job Cathy, keep up the good work! |
I sure hope Almond is doing better soon, Cathy. When I had a cat that had blockage from crystals, the vet cleaned it out by shooting some hydrogen peroxide into the penis. I know its a different kind of crystal but it seemed to work right away. The cat started peeing before the vet could get his hand out of the way. Maybe you could do it like treating the does for mastitis? I can't think of what they call it when you shoot something up into the teat. Do you know what I'm talking about? Maybe you could even mix some AC into water and shoot that up there to start breaking it up from the outside as well as internally.
Let me know if you need any help holding him or anything. Kitty |
What dilution do you give this stuff? He is gagging and slinging!
Thanks Kitty. I have become pretty good at penning them in the corner with my legs. He is going to hate me after all of this. . . |
Mix 1/4 cup Slippery Elm Bark with 4 Tablespoons AC. Add in 1/2 Cup Peanut butter. Mix and knead well. Form into a log and cut into 12 equal size pieces. Roll each piece into a ball. There is your dosage ball. 1 ball = 1 Teaspoon.
I make these for Frankie and he gets one a day for prevention. I have made it without slippery elm bark but it's a lot messier. I think I substituted corn meal or whole wheat flour to make it firmer. Slippery Elm bark bonds everything together nice...plus it's good for digestion :) |
I also made up Minelson's dosage balls, only using the cornmeal. One of my boys would eat them & the other would not.
Just what I would do Cathy but I would continue to drench him with the AC in water until he starts peeing really good, I would do mine for 2 weeks if it were mine. Then switch him to the dosage balls if you decide to. To start out today & tomarrow, maybe even for 3 days, I would mix 2 teaspoons in water & give it to him. If he will take it better do 1 tsp. in the a.m. & 1 in the p.m. for like 3 days. Then switch to 1 1/2 tsp a day for the rest of the 2 weeks. That's just what I would do. Is he peeing any kind of stream yet? |
I wonder if it would taste better if it was mixed with kool-aid..
|
Kool-aid might be a good idea to add for the taste! Good thinking, might cut the AC taste out a bit.
|
Well, I about gave up on him. . .he was lying down, his belly is big, with his head in the hay. Took his temp 102.2. I gave him another banamine shot(vet said only once a day - but what the he**). He let me pour warm water over him and massage his belly some(made me need to pee). I took the AC and squirted it up his penis. I think that I can feel a stone a few inches up. Came up stairs to mix some peanut butter/AC up and when I went down he was up eating hay. I did not want to stop him from eating so I will wait on the PB&AC. Keep him in your thoughts, I am going to massage my boy some more. Sigh, I really hope he can make it, :(
|
You are doing everything possible. I'm sending you both lots of strength and hugs....
|
I'm sending prayers and :grouphug: your way!
I've got a friend on his way to the Emergency Vets office right now with his pet wether. He's going to have surgery tomorrow morning to "re-route" things.... He'll be peeing like a girl if all goes well. Val |
Keeping you both in my thoughts! Sending hugs to you & give one to Almond for me too! I know how your feeling, it's such a helpless feeling but your doing Great! Don't give up, Dose him twice tomarrow with AC too & hopefully you'll be able to see him pee a little more normal tomarrow.
Is he still drinking water or Apple Cider vinegar water from a bucket? The AC should make him very thirsty so he should want to drink more which will help to flush the AC through his system & flush out the stones. Maybe warm water, my goats love it warm. |
