Help four month old buck very weak

He has been very feeble all day.

Called the vet. Asked about eyes...very white...no pink

Wormed him 2 CC ivomectin (sp?)

Gave him probiotics and nutra drench.

Still just laying there. Tried to call the vet to see what else to do tonight...can't get ahold of her.

Any suggestions? Do I continue giving the nutra drench? how much?

Thanks so much for any advice.

some other things

Won't eat or drink... not even sweet feed. Just sits there.

Where are you located? Ivermec may not be effective in your area.

In a case like this I'd switch to Cydectin so I know those worms will be taken care of. He's not going to eat or drink if he's feeling that bad. What's his temp?

I'd continue with the nutridrench (red cell would be better). Give supportive therapy, B vitamins, warmth, protection from other goats. He's weak and drained and helpless.

I'd also tube him with some electrolytes for now for quick energy. No milk. Offer hay only-no grain, and of course fresh water. Hopefully he'll pull through for you.

Thanks Happy Farmer for the word of encouragement.

I'm located in Southeast Tennessee.

The nutra drench? How much would you give? I gave him an oz about 2 hours ago. It says not to give more than 8 oz per 24 hours.

I'd go ahead and give another dose-but I really really would prefer Redcell (horse product) if you can get some-much better than nutridrench. Now's the time to react effectively.

Check his temp....low and you may be fighting a losing battle if he's that far gone.

I have nothing to offer but encouragement. Pulling for you and your little guy.

Jubel 08/03/10 08:13 PM

The stores are closed, so I couldn't get red cell. I will see in the morning.
I'm praying.... literally .....that God heals him in spite of me and letting this happen!

Minelson 08/03/10 08:38 PM

Hugs and prayers for you.....

I hope he's doing better today! I know you guys are having terrible heat there now too, my goats lay around alot more in the heat like we've been having as well.

I would re-worm him with Cydectin.
Have you tried getting him to drink water with some Apple cider Vinegar in it? Mine prefer that over regular water.
The recipe for homemade electrolyte water is:
1 liter water
1/4 tsp of salt
1/4 tsp. Baking soda
2 TBSP. Honey or sugar
Mix that up & see if he'll drink any of that, it surely won't hurt him.

With all this heat I've had to mix salt & sugar in my ducks water every week lately too, I guess the heat effects there electrolytes. Been doing it the weeks we've had such high temp.'s.

If I have a goat acting sick and refusing to eat, I give thiamin and Nuflor. Goats can have pneumonia without necessarily having a cough or runny nose. I learned that last year when the vet came out. If he's not drinking, you need to keep him hydrated with lactated ringers subQ.

Jubel 08/04/10 10:33 AM

We made it through the night. He is just laying there. I brought some browse to him. He acts like he wants to eat. Eats a couple of leaves and then stops.

I just bought some red cell and gave it to him.
He eyes are still white. How long will it take for the pink to come back..assuming the worming medicine is working.

????How do you get him to drink if he doesn't want it????

Whatever happens... THANK YOU for taking the time to give me all these helpful suggestions.

It can take days for the color to return

If he won't drink just drench him. I'd mix 1/4 cup molasses with a quart of water and add a pinch of salt and about 1/2 tsp baking soda

You need to tube him.

Ivomec is good, BUT Strongid would be better for him. It stays in his gut longer. And is not as hard on his system as a dose of Ivomec is.

Temp him with whatever he wants to eat. I'd stay away from any molasses based feeds or too much of the feel good stuff- just do some electrolyte based things- pedialyte, etc. and get a dosing syringe.

I used a Gerber baby oatmeal formula when we saved a doe with tetanus- milk and the dry oatmeal - as long as they have a good swallowing reflex do it every couple of hours.

Well, I've moved him to a crate near the house. He is rough. According to vet's advice I've started him on antibiotics... due to possible ulcers from the worms. I wormed him again with a different wormer. Given him nutra drench, redcell, plenty of water. He acted like he wanted to eat earlier, but stopped after eating just a little bit.

Pony 08/04/10 10:03 PM

You're doing great, Jubel. Just hang in there. We're all pulling for you and your little guy!

mygoat 08/04/10 10:11 PM

Being a buck and saying you offered sweet feed - could it be UC? Has he urinated?

Jubel 08/05/10 08:33 AM

Guys,

He head up this morning and he is maaing.... Yea! compared to last night, lift his head and it flops down and you have to look to see if he breathing.

This is much better.... still won't eat or stand. I'm continuing the Red Cell, Drench, water, offering browse and shifting his position.

For those of you guys who are praying...keep it up.. hopefully I will be able to tell you his standing or at least eating at the end of the day.

THANK YOU...ALL OF YOU.

Backfourty,MI. 08/05/10 09:06 AM

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the both of You! Keep up the good work, it sounds like he may be improving!

While giving antibiotics , I would try & get a little flavored yogurt in him daily to help with his stomach. Maybe in a childs medicine syringe or even off a spoon.

Minelson 08/05/10 10:20 AM

I'm glad he is a little better this morning...I will say a prayer and so will my Mom and Niece who are here visiting....

Jubel 08/06/10 07:20 AM

Well... the fight is over. I took him to the vet last night and she gave him a mineral shot, a B vitamin shots and a iron shot.

He ate yesterday and drank by himself. This morning he was dead.

Oh well.. .it's sad, frustrating, but thanks again for all the prayers and advice.
You guys were great. I tell you one thing. I will be checking eyes everyday!
What a hard way to learn that lesson.

KareninPA 08/06/10 08:00 AM

I'm sorry :(

Pony 08/06/10 08:35 AM

Well dang it. :(

You really gave it your best shot. It IS disappointing, but as you said, you've learned from it, but wow... that's a harsh lesson.

Sorry you lost him. This would be a good goat to necropsy to see just what you were dealing with.

I am so sorry :( Hugs to you :(
