FarmerJohn, I agree with Emily; great tutorial on bio-tracking's site. If you still can't bring yourself to do the draw, see if one of the HT folk who knows how to do it lives somewhere near you. It's a shame your vet won't even do the draw. Will his tech do it on "off-duty" hours?

The fellow who was selling the goat has not gotten back to us, even though Nick left a message. I suppose he may have found a buyer who wasn't so particular about testing (he put an ad on one of those radio buy/sell/trade shows), or he just didn't want to be bothered with the testing.

Or perhaps I wasn't as impressed with his buck's lines (conformation and pedigree) as he wanted me to be. <shrug> Emily, you know the line I'm talking about. I didn't say anything about it, but seriously, Beaux looks better as a yearling than his buck looks as a two year old.

ANYway, catty comments aside, it appears he isn't a man of his word. We'd pretty much agreed that he'd sell us the goat as soon as we saw a negative CAE. The least he could have done is return our call.

Oh, well. Whenever a deal like this falls through, I thank God that I dodged a bullet.

Thanks so much for the info on learning how to draw blood. Vet I called to do weathers is popular in area-boys were in my 4-H club and help dad out as both want to be vets and are in college now. During second set of young bucks being wethered and shots mom came out and told the boys that they would be doing no more goats. Never looked at us at all. So when I asked at front desk I was told they were not going to do any and it was too much trouble for them Ever vet in town and within 50 miles has been called to see if they will take care of goats in any way and the answer is no. So-I learn all I can. Not squimish at all but want to make sure I am doing things right and am quick and precise in any thing with a needle or a scalpel. Thnaks again for the info. Will be looking at doing this within the next week.

Good luck and it really is as easy as it looks. Especially if you have help in the holding. Don't get too worked up if you have to stick some goats a few times to find the vein, it happens to us all. The goat will be fine.

That's very sad! What's wrong with those vets?

I was trying to figure out why you went to look at a goat today, Pony.

Then, there was a post from someone who no longer has goats.

Then, I looked at the date!

Oops, I was looking up where to get CAE testing and read this old thread but didn't notice the date when I replied! Sorry for the confusion.

I found this site that has five tests for $25.00. Has anyone used this?

Yes. Very nice guy. Works out of his basement. Tests aren't super reliable.

Could you explain? Do you mean His tests or any tests concerning testing goat diseases? Someone on this thread mentioned that Elisa is about 90% accurate & AGID is about 65% accurate. Is that true?

I read that before six months of age, Johnnes and CAE may not be detectable. Also, colostrum can be checked for CAE instead of doing the blood test.
