HELP!! I got my hands full.
Friday I went to the local killers and he had a doe that just had twins, she is a mess, pink eye and was laying in mud, looked like she hadn't been taken care of at ALL!!! The kids were up and moving around, but the little bucking has both eyes watering and the doe-ling has just one watering, looks like PINK EYE. He had started them on a bottle and they are nursing mom too.
So I bought her and brought her home and have them quarantined in the barn. The first thing I done was give the old doe 4cc of LA 200 and wormed her with IVEMIC 3cc orally. And I started the kids on Vit D milk, they drank 16 oz the first 24 hrs and suckeled on mom too. I get up this mornng and the twins have passed BRIGHT RED bloody stools. The little buckling has both eyes completely shut and the doeling still has one but the old doe eyes have cleared up. All temps are in range. and the twins are still sucking mom and have takein 16oz more of milk so far. Where do I start to help more and what do I need to do? The doe seems to be a Boer Cross and the babies are Black headed looking boer type. An---eas will be appriciated. If you would like to call me my number is 765-346-8351. Thanks Thom Hacker Cloverdale, IN |
I do hope someone with knowledge will call you. In the meantime, how old are the kids, about how much do they weigh, did you worm them, is their stool runny?
If you have it on hand I think that if they were mine I would get some Kaopectate down them to help soothe their intestinal track. I would not use Pepto as it contains asprin and asprin may irritate a already inflamed bowel. |
They were born on Thursay nite or friday Morning,so 2 day old, and thier stool is watery and green. No I have NOT wormed them. Looks at time they may be constipated too.
|
BH I just don't have any advice to give you on kids that young, I sure hope someone will come on here and help you out. I thought that maybe they might have the runs and older. That is why I suggested the Kao. Are they straining to poo?
|
Yes they seem to be, but the last time about ten mins ago it was orangie in color and no blood.
|
That is a good sign then, hopefully it will go to a baby-do yellow. If you have triple antibiotic ointment on hand you can put that in the kids eyes.
|
If you believe the kids truely have eye problems then drip or rub LA200 into their eyes twice a day for three days...These pity buys can sometimes end up as a nightmare. Yellow poop is good, little blood in poop is not unusual. Worming the mama was the best thing you did...Kids will rebound in 24 hours I'm sure...Topside

Are you sure the kids are this young? If so they can not have worms or coccidia yet as it would not have enough time to complete a life cycle and cause that much damage. Giving the location and the conditions I would think more of salmonella poisoning as it fits very well. I would NOT treat them for diarrhea but more or less give them supportive care because if it is salmonella they it needs to run its course and their bodies need to do what nature designed. If they get dehydrated then give them pedialite instead of milk. I would say that they got contaminated via moms teats so make sure shes good and clean and be careful as its transmittable to you. Peppermint is a great thing to sooth the intestinal tract. If you know of some one who raises puppies parvaid or parvo guard is a great treatment.
As far as the eyes as one said neosporin is great to use, warm compresses always help, but be careful once again as it is contagious |
If the doe is as bad off as you describe I'd give her a couple more CC's of wormer. Plus I'd worm again within 7days of the first dose....Are these your first goats? Topside
|
Highly unlikely that the kids have Pinkeye...Orange poop indicates that the kids are only a few days old...Topside

Orange poo, yellow poo that is sticky and nasty is normal. It is newborn colostrum poo. My dogs love it, which makes it even ickier if you ask me.
You can gently rinse their eyes with warm water and a bit of salt. You can also put a small amount of neosporin in there. Sounds like they were living in filth so they probably have dirt and god knows what else in there. I would not worm the babies they are too young. LA 200 stings like a booger and I would let it get closer to room temp before you give the mom anymore. If it is pink eye you should keep mom out of sunlight or make her an eye patch. Good Luck |
Local Killers?
My mind is trying to understand this... are these professional killers? a sale barn? an abbatoir? an animal rescue? some of Charlie Manson's family? |
Update:
TEXICAN: I got her from the Kill house!Place were you pickem out and they help process them. OK I got in touch with my vet and he gave me, 10cc Gentamicin, 10cc Dexamethasone and 10cc Sterile water and put in spray bottle, I used Listerine and cleaned mommas and babies weeping and matter out around their eyes and then used the spray. The kids have eatin another 4oz each this evening, and I gave the momma 4cc SQ of LA200. and gave her another 2cc of Ivermic. Hope this works and I will keep you updated and try to take a few pics too.
TOPSIDE 1: I got ny first goats this spring(FEB) 8 bottle babies; 3 Nubians and 5 boers, since then I have aquired 7 older Boer nannies and 2 -3 month old Nubian/Boer cross bucks. P.S. I have pics on my FB page too. |
Oh my, you do have your hands full. Best of luck to you, I am a softie for a bad luck case, too.
|
I think the gent will take care of just about anything going on, if it can be helped. The Dex and sterile water are also on the right track.
Sounds like they have a great chance of making it! Best you can do is give the gent (I would not bother with the LA 200 now, which you probably know), keep them dry and clean with food and water now and see how they improve. |
Sad note!
Got home from work today at 6:PM, and the buckling was in bad shape. His belly was really swollen, couldn't stand at all, frothing white stuff at the mouth and passed away 2o minutes later. He was the worst of the two.
GOOD NEWS!!! The doeling was up walking around every where and her eye was less cloudy today, she is eating like a PIG!! Mommas eyes were not watering and the bad eye was less cloudy too. With luck I think I will end up with a couple of new girls that are gonna make it!! Will update tomorrow. THANKS TO ALL THAT HAVE RESPONDED!! Very appreciated. Thom |
sorry you lost the one, but you really tried to save him! You are a great person. But I am confused, you go to a kill barn and you pick out the one you want butchered and then take them home? I am just confused.
|
After they get better, draw blood and have all of your goats tested for CAE at least.
www.biotracking.com will do the testing. |

Update: Been a week!!!
Little one is doing great, eye is still a little cloudy but she goes everywhere in the barn. Momma has gained 6 lbs and hair is looking a lot better and her eyes are now clear.
|
Congrats! That's wonderful news!

Oh, they look great! The little doeling is just precious. Her happy tail and flying ears make me smile!
I'm so glad you saved them.:) |
What a great picture! I love the color of Hazel and Princess looks just like a little Princess! SWEET! :)
|
Thanks to you again!!!

|
So glad everyone is doing so well & momma & doeling made it. They are beautiful! Love Hazel's coloring!
I have always liked the boer goat but I'm afraid if I get one Dh will want to raise them to butcher so I still don't have one. |

HA! That should have made Post Of The Day!!!!!!!! I'm still confused though. Local Kill House? So, if they were supposed to be killed (for meat) were they brought in by someone local (wanting the meat to be processed so they could take it back home) or some buyer that buys up goats and sells them. Do they just sell the goats to the Kill House, and you can go and pick out the animal you want and buy it so it isn't killed? I'm not so sure a Kill House is the best place to get goats. If they came from some buyer - they have probably already been through some auction house, loaded on his truck, and now dropped off at the Killing house. It's hard to tell how many diseases were in the auction barn, the truck, and the Killing House's holding yard. Glad things are working out though. So, if you don't mind me asking, how much did you have to pay for the doe and her two kids? |
Michael, I have a county neighbor who raises lambs for the ethnic market. She doesn't have the necessary legal requirements to be a slaughterhouse (nor does she want to), but buyers come to her farm, buy a lamb and then slaughter the lamb themselves in a designated area.
It sounds like maybe this is a similar setup to what the OP is describing? |
Mike,
There is a place near the West side of Indianapolis that buys goats and sheep from producers and sells them to whom ever wants them. The place is setup to have the animal processed in the manner that the wish. They can kill and skin them and process there or load em up and take em home. This place is inspected by the INDIANA board of Health and USDA. Yes there is a chance that you could pick up all kinds of diseases and stuff that could be there from livestock auctions and dirty farms, etc... I happen to be fortunate enough to have a place to Quarantine from all the other goats that I have. But I'm not fortunate enough to go pay HIGH dollar for animals off of HIGH dollar farms either. I just happened to be there that day and this doe had had her twins on the outside of his barn and he offered a great deal for them, $75.00for all. Yes I have never raised goats till early this spring and started with 8 bottle babies. I ahve gained a great wealth of knowledge in this endevor and hope to someday have a farm that will produce nice animals for a FAIR price that people can appriciate the fine art of raiseing goats. |
8 bottle babies! you were brave for a first timer, i had 4 and didnt really know what I was doing and I also started this last spring. BUt I like you have learned a lot!
