We haven't bought store milk in over three years. Yes, goat milk. Yes, raw.
WOO HOO!

Oh yuck! My mom drinks is straight from the goat. She had me convinced it was the "real" way to enjoy milk so I tried it. I don't like ANY warm milk so guess what...I didn't like it HOT!

Pasteurization didn't even exist before 1864 and people have been keeping dairy animals much longer than that.

We did an experiment. We took two clean sealable containers - One we put a pint of fresh goat milk in and the other we put a pint of store bought cow milk in it. We then put them in my little refrigerator in my tack room.
Well. . .I then got trampled(Aug 4th) by one of my horses and we forgot all about "our experiment". The vet came out to pull blood for testing on my goats and he asked me how long the milk stays good - Then I remembered the "experiment" - we were both surprized - this was late Oct and there was no smell to the goat milk. It had separated with a thick spongy curd on top - the store bought you could not tell that it had ever been milk.
I stuck it back in the refrigerator, forgot it again and last month threw everything out. Even then it only had a light mold from us touching it. I was impressed.

As a newbie goat person I think the thing that shocks people more is the fact I have to milk the goats, not that I want to drink the milk. Go figure. That's the question I get when I mention it "You mean you are going to milk a goat?".
I'm excitedly awaiting April when my two alpines are due. Right now I'm thinking of a theme for the new kids. I think I might name them all after veggies (that way if they turn into stew no one will understand what Carrot, Potato and Asparagus really means)

We drank goat milk raw when we had dairy goats, cow milk raw when we had our cow. We're hoping to get a new cow soon so we can have more raw milk!

Raw here too.
Speaking of, a person has contacted me wanting to buy milk for her infant. Does the milk have to be pastuerized for the infant to consume it?

<gollum voice> Give it to usss raw and wriggling! </gollum voice>
Okay, not wriggling, but definitely raw! That's one of the reasons I got goats.
And I'm with Emily. There's nothing in the world like Jersey milk (which is close to half and half when it comes out of that marvelously pretty dispenser).

We not only drink it raw but we sell over 100 gallons per week. It's legal and we are licensed here in Maine.

General Brown- my great nephew has been on raw goats milk for the past 4 months. He was a premie and has a g tube due to severe reflux and the doctors considered him failure to thrive. Had it not been for the raw goats milk Lane might have died.

We drink our goat milk raw. Used to drink cow milk raw when I was growing up, but have only had goats for the last 27 years. I honestly think that pasteurizing ruins good milk -- if it's your own milk you are drinking.

I've never really been a milk drinker, but I use raw goat milk on my cereal. My hubby likes to drink it. I also cook with it and we make feta and chevre. I think it's ridiculous to use store bought cow's milk out of cows treated with hormones when I can use what is basically organic goat milk. I don't get weird comments about the milk, but some folks freak when I tell them we eat some of our buck kids. Makes more sense to me to eat what I raise than to sell the bucklings/wethers and then buy grocery store meat and pretend it's not really an animal.

We are raw drinkers here too...when my dd was little (around 2 or 3) she would wait until I brought in the milk and want it warm.

Been drinking raw milk here for about a year- okay, not now, but will resume when violet freshens. When my husband told my mil we had a milk goat, she said something to the extent of, I hope you pasteurized it, its not safe. The best part to me is, she eats steak tartar.

That seems to be what happens a lot, sadly.
@mrs.H: You think you're a dare devil? Most definitely not! There are far too many people who are afraid to touch stuff that has come straight from the animal since they are so disconnected from Nature.

No I don't think I'm a dare devil, but some of the people I know clearly think I am. I just wanted to know if I were strange:banana02:
