There is a south pacific grocery store where I live that sells them. A colleague treated me to a dish and it was wonderful. In addition, the meat is very low fat, which is perfect for my diet. And I figure a goat is probably as big an animal as I will want to slaughter myself.

The appeal to me of auction animals is cost of course, as well as the simplicity. No appointments or bargaining with the seller. Just show up and bid on the young animals that most appeal to me, raise them up a bit, slaughter, and eat. Then if I like the whole goat rearing thing, I'll find some better stock next time.

I don't like the idea of buying castoff milk goat kids. Adults I have seen are pretty scrawny compared to meat goat breeds. I already did something like that with chickens and it defeated the purpose of the experiment to some extent. Bought a laying rather than a meat breed, and they were puny things when processed. Kind of sells the whole thing short... no big payoff in the end to get the real feel of the whole thing. This time it is meat breed or nothing.

I'm going to visit the Mountain View auction soon, and the people who run the Blanchard poultry auction have expanded to goats and sheep recently. They are both the second and fourth Saturday of the month, with Mtn View starting at 3 and Blanchard at 2. Before I make a decision I want to visit both of those as well as El Reno.
