I had a first time doe this year that I sat up with and she would not let me sleep all night long, the moment I would doze off and stop paying attention to her she would start pawing me or start screaming in my face. Finally at 8:30 in the morning I decided that I was too cold, hungry and in need of a potty break to stay out in the kidding enclosure any longer. Exactly 21 minutes later I got a call from the neighbor saying "Your goat is having her kids outside".
They can absolutely drive you mad trying to figure out when the moment is at hand. And most of mine seem to kid just shortly after I or someone else has been out to check on them.

She looks pretty close to me .......
I was alone when my first goat kidded, and yes, I was scared.
She was only 2 at the time, first kids for her and the first I had ever seen born. I paced, she yelled, I paced some more and at one point I had the phone in my hand dialing the Vet to calm me down, then I hung up the phone before they answered, telling myself, “you can do this Kris, you know you can, you have to!”. Had read everything I could find and felt well informed, but still very scared.
Then something took over and I just got a grip on myself and hunkered down there on the ground with her and talked and petted her. I was fine after that. Calm takes over you when an animal needs you and you just do what needs to be done.
I bet the same thing will happen to you. You CAN do this! Remain calm, take a deep breath.
All went well, only had to straighten out a front leg on the first one, Ruby did all the work, I was just there to comfort her, dry the kids off, dip their navels and bring water to the new Mama.
The kids were on their feet within seconds of being born, looking for milk. Ruby’s a great Mom.
It was an amazing thing to be part of.
3 hours later I lay down and got all cold and shaky because the adrenaline wore off. Didn’t sleep more than 20 minutes at a time for a week because I kept having to go out there to make sure everyone was OK. 5 months later, the twins and Mama are still doing fine.
I have Alpines by the way, big milk goats, I love them.
Kris

Welcome to the wonderful world of goat midwifery.
Yes, we all go a little nuts at kidding season. Since, for most of us, that's five or six months away, we are living vicariously through you. So, tell her to get on with it!

I knew she wouldn't have them while you were gone! LOL! She needs to drive you a little more crazy before she kids That is how they are...maybe tonight...are you checking on her through the night? I slept in my cloths and checked every 2 hours...for 6 weeks.ugh!
And I can really relate to what Kris is saying about being scared and then getting calm when it happens. I felt a sense of peace wash over me when she started and got all calm and serene. It was one of the best experiences I have ever gone through

My luck is ours always have them in the early morning or when I am at work and I come home and find them hiding out in the back pasture. Only our one pet Dolly she likes to be close to the house. Last year was a bad year we lost a lot of ours due to predators our Great Pyr has grown a lot over the year so I hope that she can handle the kidding this year. Ours are now breeding I think this crazy weather has them mixed up. We had doubles also and one had three. It is so amazing watching them grow. I love to see them running around. If this is her first time it make take a while. If she has had some before they come faster.

I missed every kidding this year but one, and not by hours but minutes, either waking up and hearing momma talk and they would be drying them off, or pull up from work and see slime covered babies.
I have came to the conclusion that they just dont want us around. The only way I caught this one is I was on my way to town and noticed that this doe was in the bottom of the pasture, this is the choice kidding spot and they only go there to kid, had I not looked as I was pulling out of the driveway I would have missed them as well.

Ligs are the best way to tell.
Pawing is done to find something comfortable too. You can tell the difference because of the intensity of the pawing, pacing, then pawing again.
And when the babies are in the right place, you won't see them moving because they will be too low.
I did have a goat that would cross her legs and look at me, then wait until I would leave.

That is why I (all but one time) hand breed, I absolutely must know the breeding dates. I'd also be LOST without my video monitor! When the due date is close I watch for the ligaments to soften, the flanks and tail head to sink in, and the udder for sudden changes/filling, which so far have always happened with mine. Also the nesting behavior which sometimes only happens JUST before they start pushing.

That didn't help me much this past spring. I had two go 8 and 9 days early, two went 8 days late. I think I had one actually kid at day 150 - and of course, I wasn't expecting that!

This is what I thought too until my doe delivered in the middle of the night (surprise surprise) and I had seen lots of movement at feeding time that night....definitely the kid...not rumen. These silly goats just love to keep us guessing LOL.

Oh What a wonderful day.. The birth with great without any troubles. Got to see everything and boy was it GREAT.. When it came time for her to be born all my fear left an I was nothing but calm. Thought I be scared out of my witts but nope. After she hit the ground momma started cleaning her and I got my old towel to help so she wouldn't be wet long an then dip the cord in idone to. Gave momma some water molassa water and then started taking photos like crazy until my batties died.
Over look the ducktape on momma horn we not got that off her finally after the baby got here. All is Great and we're so thankfully it hasn't got cold here just yet. They are giving cold weather this weekend so the baby got here before that hits.
Will post other photos later when can get more. Right now have to wait on batteires to charge back up. Will make a new thread for the new photos later.
