My goats are named with various methods. Sometimes it's just something that appeals or fits the situation (a doe named Siren that was delivered while I was sitting in a metal shed in the midst of a storm listening to tornado sirens going off).

1) I give names based on dam or sires name. Such as Morgan Le Fay and her daughters Cassandra, Endora, Esmerelda, etc (all witches names and boy do they fit!). Another doe was Kizmet, her daughter Fate and grand-daughters Karma and Destiny...
2) I make a list of names that I like and find one that fits a certain goats personality when the time comes.

Sometimes their "call" name can't be put on registration papers

Our Boer buck Nickel got his name cause when he was born I made the comment to a friend that he had a head on him that made him look more like a Buffalo than a goat. She said right then well name him Nickel, proud to say that he has now grown to fit his head.
My grandson named his goat after his favorite basketball player, we shortened it to Shaq.
I have a goat named Chatty Kathy cause she never shuts up.
I have a goat named Loretta
Her daughter is Lynn
What did you come up with for your goat?
Nancy

I usually like to name my animals, well at least the dogs & goats people names. But like some others here sometimes I have to wait & see what I think fit's them. I too have a list of names I like & will pick from that if I see one on there I think fits the animals.

Our Buck's name is Riley, don't know where I got it but it fits him & he knows his name too.
I really like the name Finley, Winston, Nelson & Tucker too!

How did we name our goats and sheep? Who knows, they are Lilly, Rocky, Joel and Steve. I'm not sure how the names were picked.

I so agree with most here, just get to know them first and them name them.
For instance my neighbor named his Border Collie “Scout”. He is the most timid animal I have ever seen. Why would anyone pick a name for such an animal. I call him Scooter.

Just get to know them and the name will come …
Mine are CenterMile (Farm Name), Ruby Ray, Holly Anne, Grace of my Heart and Toby Walker.
Cats are Stella (that’s so fun to yell outside Selllllaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa), Jack and TT
Dogs are Hunter and Jenga.

All of my goats are named after magic.... Abra, Kadabra, Alla, and Kazam Luna, Houdini, Copperfield... etc

You can do things like that... but naming a goat Houdini is just asking for it!

I like to name based on personality, but I do try to follow a little bit of order, just to remember who belongs to who. Each generation has a name with the same first letter. For example, my two ND who will be bred in the spring or fall of next year, their names are Blaze and Banji. I will probably pick C names for their babies and then D names for the next generation etc. That way I keep it a bit straight. But then it's just what name sticks out for them and they always get little nicknames. Blaze's nickname is Blazy Maisy and Banji's nickname is Banjelino.
